$ 1,400 stimulus check, but with a catch? What you need to know about a third party payment

America’s third stimulus check could shake up the rules even more.

James Martin / CNET

President Joe Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion stimulus package and the third stimulus check from up to $ 1,400 came one step closer to reality this week: on Friday the The Senate passed a budget resolution for the bill, which could make it easier for Democrats to go ahead with passing a final bill. However, the next payment could bring you a catch. It seems likely the controls will be “aimed” at people below a certain income level – so while that that are qualified gets a bigger payment than the first or second check, a change to the stimulus check formula could mean that some are not getting any money at all.

We show you what it all means so far, from the upper limit of $ 1,400 to ways qualifications can change to accommodate more groups and potentially make more money for your family. We will also have one powerful but rarely used tool that senate leaders prepare to try to get a bill up for approval faster, as well as what happens when a payment comes in in the middle of the tax season. For example, would it be your tax returns and returns?

Here’s everything we know about one so far third stimulus checkincluding how you can set yourself up to possibly get the new funds faster. This has recently been updated.

What is a ‘targeted’ stimulus check and why do some legislators want it?

The simple explanation is that some people worry that a $ 1,400 stimulus check will go to some of the people with relatively high incomes. If the bill is aimed at people with a lower income, use our stimulus calculator for the third controla person can earn $ 102,900 per year (their adjusted gross income) and still get a partial payment … of $ 5.

The point is, if lawmakers want people who earn less than $ 75,000 a year to get $ 1,400, they need to make adjustments to the way things are done. One way would be to get the stimulus check formula that was used in the first two controls. Another would be to present a random cutoff (for example, a check would only go out to people making less than a certain amount per year, according to their AGI). A third could be to decrease the maximum amount of the next stimulus payment (because, math). Our stimulus check article explains more.

Stimulus Check # 3: What You Need to Know

Is there any way to get my third check faster?

Possibly. Your incentive check and taxes are closely intertwined. There are a number of important things you should know about how your taxes can affect whether or not you qualify, depending on eligibility rules and your adjusted gross income for 2020. But now there are also taxes attached to it lack of incentive money you maybe should claim or track. If you file your taxes earlier, you can get a reimbursement (plus missing incentive money) faster than if, for example, you have applied for a tax extension. We also recommend installing direct deposit with the IRS to catch up faster – and possibly a new stimulus check.

Is the $ 1,000 check in the GOP $ 600 billion stimulus plan still pending?

In recent days, Biden and his government have made it clear that it will not try to change his $ 1.9 trillion incentive plan to fit in a $ 600 billion counter-proposal from a group of 10 moderate Republican senators. Biden wants to keep both the baseball field price tag on the bill and the Maximum of $ 1,400 per person, saying the Republican bid was “not even in the cards,” Politico and other outlets reported.

“We can’t walk away from an extra $ 1,400 in direct checks that we’ve proposed because the people need them,” Biden said in a phone call on Wednesday with Congressional Democrats, according to a source speaking to The Hill. “We better target them.”

Now that the Senate has approved the budget resolution for Biden’s proposal, Democratic lawmakers can move on to another COVID-19 relief bill that a filibuster can bypass in the Senate. The budget resolution will go back to the House of Representatives next week, where lawmakers must approve the same version before they begin writing the final waiver law. Once the House approves the funding proposed by the Senate, Congress will use the approved budget as a blueprint to draft Biden’s law, which is expected to go to a vote in March, if not sooner.

The new stimulus check timeline is starting to take shape

With a smaller, patchy bill that focuses on a third stimulus control and Distribution of COVID-19 vaccines Off the table, Democrats are now looking for a March 14 passage for the next incentive law. But even if Congress could meet that precise date, it doesn’t mean you would get your money immediately.

There are many variables we can guess based on the initial check that can affect you personally, and others that we don’t know the answer to until we can review the text of a final incentive invoice. For example, tax season 2020 could have a dramatic effect on how and when you will receive your next payment – we’ll have to see how it all turns out.

In the meantime, we have mapped out some data a the third stimulus check could possibly comedepending on who you are.

How soon would the IRS issue the third check? Would they still have a deadline?

The IRS and the Treasury Department are moving at lightning speed deliver the second stimulus controls, starting within days of the signing of former President Donald Trump December’s Incentive Act. They had no choice. The language of the invoice only offered a 17-day window to send the checks before the deadline imposed. There were millions of direct deposit errors, and now anyone who lacks incentive money will have to claim it as part of the 2020 tax filing. (Yes, even taxpayers, also.)

It’s too early to say whether the IRS would automatically send a third check to recipients, as they have done with the second stimulus controls, or if the money would be packed in one Refund Discount. or the like. We go through more possible scenarios for the third stimulus check timeline here.

Can stimulus check qualifications change with the third pay?

Biden proposes two changes that are popular among Democratic lawmakers. The first would expand qualifications to dependents of any age, including 13.5 million more people, according to the People’s Policy Project, such as students, older adult relatives and dependents of all ages with disabilities (not just persons under 17 years of age).

The second eligibility change includes all “households of mixed status“with one or more family members who are not US citizens. For example, if the parents are not US citizens, but their children, who were born in the US, are. The second incentive controls comprehensive suitability for families with a U.S. citizen spouse.

Some families could get more money next time, even with a targeted check

A higher maximum total per person is the obvious way your household would get more money from a third check than the second, but there’s more to it. Because the upper limit for the second check was $ 600 per adult, with an extra $ 600 per child depending, the route the IRS formula works, more people are reaching the upper limit of receiving a second payment, which means they will was actually not eligible to receive incentive money all the way.

A third stimulus check could create more groups of people qualify for a stimulus check (namely non-residents who pay taxes), and bring a larger check total to qualified individuals and their families. A change in your circumstances could also mean that you qualify for more money this time. Here are other ways a third stimulus check could generate more money in your pocket.

If a payment of $ 1,400 is approved, can some people still get $ 2,000?

Biden’s incentive plan requires the next check to be up to $ 1,400 per eligible adult – not the $ 2,000 some originally expected. The idea is that this third check “raises” the maximum of $ 600 outlined in the second stimulus check to $ 2,000 once you combine the totals per person – but without taking into account dependent persons.

One question is whether, if the qualifications were expanded to new groups of people not included in the first round, the new recipients could get the full $ 2,000 amount. There hasn’t been any significant public discussion on the topic so it’s one we’ll continue to follow, but we wouldn’t necessarily hold our breath.
