Driving with the door in an SUV can be an exhilarating experience, especially when out and about. Whether you are aWith two or four doors, these pivot panels are removable for a cool look and a more airy driving experience. And while the process may sound difficult, it̵
Make sure the window glass is down to start. This protects it from damage during removal and storage, as well as the reinstallation process. The last thing you want is for one of these panes to shatter because you forgot to lower it. Unlike its main rival, theFord’s new Bronco has frameless windows, so the doors are actually quite compact, about half the height of the Wrangler’s. This is of great benefit if you take them off and throw them around – more on that later.
After lowering the glass, push the folding side mirrors forward so they don’t get in the way or scratch the doors when you pull them off. This is another advantage the Bronco has over the Wrangler; the mirrors on the Ford are attached to the body, not the front doors, so they are always in place whether you swing doors or not. Then open the door you are removing and pull out the wired multi-connector, which powers the window motor and door lock mechanism. The fit is good although it should pop out with some pulling and wiggling. Once the connector is out, a spring-loaded cover with a rubber gasket seals over the mating socket on the body shell to keep out dirt and moisture when driving off-road, a super smart touch that is preferable to the thin and loose jeep – front facing clickable cover.
Now take out the 10-millimeter socket and ratchet that comes as part of the standard tool kit with eachUse these tools to loosen the two bolts securing the doors to the hinges. The bolts on the bottom face down, while the bolts on the top hinges face up, so keep that in mind. Also, the top bolts are longer than the bottom ones, so keep that in mind when reassembling. Once these fasteners have been removed, and you have the Bronco’s optional door storage bags, now is a good time to slide them up and zip up the top section. At this point, the doors should come off the hinges relatively easily, especially if you have them in bags, as they have integrated handles. If you don’t have the bags, you can reach over the top for a good grip and grasp the outer handle with one hand. Ford has cleverly added a recessed handle on the front of the door bottoms for your other hand.
Note: On the four-door Broncos, the front doors weigh about 51 pounds and the rear legs a little less at about 44 pounds. With two-door models, the doors are of course slightly heavier because they are a bit longer. Despite being frameless, Bronco doors can actually be slightly heavier than their Jeep counterparts. That said, they are bulkier than heavy. Either way, make sure to bend your knees to avoid straining your back, and maybe also have a soft, dry place on the floor to put the doors down (maybe with a blanket), if only to adjust your grip.
Smart: All doors fit snugly into the back of a four-door Bronco, securely mounted in a harness assembly so you can remove them on the go, store them securely in the vehicle (even with the bags on), then put them back on before you go home. You cannot do that with oneThe door harness assembly attaches to a variety of cargo lashing straps and a pair of removable eye hooks that screw into the roof support frame. This construction, which resembles a multi-point seat belt, holds the doors securely so they don’t bounce or rattle. Two more important points: Each bag is designed to fit a particular door, so make sure you have the right one for the door you’re working on. The doors are also designed to be loaded into the cargo hold in a specific order, illustrated on a handy sign attached to the outside of each bag.
To reinstall the doors, simply reverse this process, paying extra attention to when it is time to reinstall the guide pin in the door hinges so that the alignment is correct.
