4 Ways to Stop the Spread of COVID-19 Spread This Winter

As COVID-19 cases are rising and temperatures are falling, we are already seeing the pandemic getting worse before winter. If there’s one benefit we had this summer, it was access to safer outdoor activities. With the temperature dropping, much of life is migrating indoors, which is not good news during this pandemic.

Because of the potential for spread of COVID-19 by air getting together inside with others you don’t live with is just more risky than being outside. Another factor is the upcoming holidays, usually involving indoor gatherings with extended friends and family. Unfortunately, the holidays will have to look different this year to stay safe.

Outside of the holidays, we still have a long winter ahead of us, but luckily there are some simple measures we can take that can significantly help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in your own community. Keep reading to find out what tips to keep in mind this winter to stay safe.

Always wear a mask with people outside your own household (indoors and outdoors)

If there is one thing we know about things that could help curb the spread of COVID-19, it is wearing masks. This simple but very effective safety measure is now a normal part of life that we have to go through all winter. You may already be wearing a mask when in public, but you should also consider wearing a mask when you are around someone who does not live with you, whether indoors or outdoors.

“The more you move outside of your immediate household, the greater the risk,” Dr. Sandra Kesh, infectious disease expert at WestMed Medical Group, told CNET. Even if you think you are around people who are cautious or feel the same way you feel about risks and safety, it’s a good idea to wear a mask as an added safety precaution, especially when you’re indoors.


Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer regularly.

Continue to wash your hands and use hand sanitizer

If you are used to that wash your hands more and use hand cleanser often, continuing this practice will only benefit you and others. If your hand hygiene is weakening, now is a good time to put it back into practice. Remember to wash for at least 20 seconds, preferably with warm water and antibacterial soap.

Practice social distancing indoors and outdoors

Social detachment is one of the most important tools we know can protect you and others around you. You may think that you only need to practice it when you are in public and around strangers, but you should consider using it in other situations as well. For example, if you’re visiting friends or family you don’t live with, you need to socialize whether you’re visiting indoors or out.

Remember to avoid situations where social distance is not possible (such as crowded stores or malls). Especially as you get closer to the holidays, you’re more likely to encounter crowds in stores, so get creative by shopping online, picking up at the sidewalk, and shopping when you can.


Organize online meetings with family and friends instead of gathering in groups.

Schedule virtual gatherings with friends and family

As the holidays get closer, it’s normal to miss friends and family and long for days when parties and travel were safe. This year, instead of in-person gatherings, plan more virtual hangouts – whether that’s everyone you normally see for a party at Zoom, or just take time to catch up with your closest friends and family.

While not ideal, this year it is the safest option we have for visiting people who are outside of your household or quarantine bubble.
