Do you know everything about how Apple’s AirTag works? You will soon.

One of Apple’s smallest product announcements to date in 2021 is the Tile-Like it Apple AirTag tracker. Any AirTag, about the size of a 50 cent coin, can be easily put in your luggage or attached to something that you constantly misplace, and you can track it down with your iPhone.

Even if it’s not within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, the tracker uses Apple’s Find My Network to help you find lost items – just as it helps you find your lost iPhone.

If you’ve just picked up an AirTag or four, here are seven tips and tricks I’ve found so far.

The installation takes less than two minutes

If you’ve set up a pair of AirPods, you’re already a pro at setting up an AirTag. If you haven’t, don’t worry – it’s incredibly easy. After taking your AirTag out of the box, remove the plastic wrap and pull out the tab that prevents the battery from powering the tag.

Unlock your iPhone and place the tag a few inches from the phone. An alert will pop up on your iPhone to let you know a new AirTag is nearby, and your phone will walk you through the rest of the setup process. You can find more information about it installation process in our guide.

How to track an AirTag nearby

Open the Find my app, select it articles tab, then tap the tag you want to find. Slide the panel up from the bottom of the screen and tap Find button.

Your iPhone will connect to the AirTag nearby, or instruct you to keep moving while it searches for the AirTag’s signal. As you get closer to the tag, your phone will show the approximate distance and direction. If you have a iPhone 11 or later, your phone uses the tags UWB signal to give you the exact location of the tag within inches. If you don’t have an iPhone with UWB functionality, your phone uses a Bluetooth Low Energy connection to point you in the right direction.

At the bottom of the screen is a speaker button that forces the tag to play a sound to help you find it.

What to do if you lose something with an AirTag attached

If you’ve completely lost your bag or keys with an attached AirTag, for example in a shopping center, the process to find it is a bit different. The first thing to do is enable Lost Mode for the AirTag. Do that through it Find my app, tap articles, select the tag you lost and slide the panel up from the bottom of the screen until you see an option to enable Lost mode.

Crane Switch, read the information on the next screen and select Continue. On the next screen, enter a phone number where you can be reached by whoever finds your lost AirTag, or tap the option to use an email address and enter your email address, then tap The next. On the next screen, turn on Report when found to know if the tag has been located by another Apple device, then tap Activate.

If you don’t mark an item as lost, whoever finds and scans your AirTag won’t know how to contact you. Do not skip this step.

Apple’s Find My network anonymously crowdsources the location of Find My devices, such as AirTags. With nearly a billion iPhones currently in use, you should have no trouble tracking the location of the tag at any time. If you have the Notify option turned on, the next time an Apple device connects to your tag, you’ll receive a notification to let you know where it is.

What to do if you find someone else’s AirTag

I’ve covered what to do if you lose an item that has an AirTag attached to it, but what if you find something that has someone else’s AirTag attached to it? It doesn’t matter if you have an iPhone or use android – You can help return the lost item to its owner by scanning the AirTag as if you were making a mobile payment.

In other words, hold the tag to the back of your phone and let the NFC scanner read the chip in the AirTag. A warning will appear on your phone with a Safari link (a Chrome link for Android users). Open it and you can see if the owner marked the item as lost, along with a phone number where you can reach them.

How to give an AirTag to someone else – without your Apple ID

Apple has designed its AirTags to be associated with a single Apple ID and there is currently no way to share a tag with other members of your Family Sharing group. That means if you conveniently set up a tag to use with your partner’s car keys, that tag is associated with your Apple ID and not your partner’s, so your partner won’t be able to retrieve the tag if it has been lost or used with it. to communicate. totally – you’ll have to do it for them.

To fix this, you’ll need to delete the AirTag from your account so they can associate it with theirs.

Open the Find my app, select it articles tap the label you want to delete and swipe up on the tray at the bottom of the screen. At the very bottom is a button with the label Remove object followed by remove. The AirTag will beep to let you know it has been removed and is ready to be set up by another user.

How to replace the battery of an AirTag

You don’t need to charge your AirTag or throw it away when the battery is empty. Instead, after about a year of daily use (which, according to Apple, is how long each AirTag should last), you can replace the battery in less than 30 seconds.

You should receive alerts on your iPhone because the battery is low (up to a month before it actually runs out), so you have plenty of time to prepare.

The AirTag uses a CR2032 battery, which can be found just about anywhere batteries are sold. Change the battery by pushing and twisting the silver back – the side with the Apple logo on it – about 1/4 turn to the left. Remove the old battery and insert the new battery into the AirTag housing with the positive “+” side up.

Replace the back by pushing it in and turning it a quarter turn to the right. You may have to play around with it a bit to get it right. The AirTag will emit a sound to let you know it is back on.
