Make your Google Home a daily helper.

Google

Hey, Google may be an integral part of your day, but you may not know everything you can do with Google Home Assistant. Spoiler alert: the possibilities are almost endless. We̵

7;re talking recipe help in the kitchen for waking up on time in the morning, entertaining partygoers, and catching up on your favorite podcasts. Google Home can do a lot.

We have seven essential tips that you will use on a regular basis.

Light it up

Equipping your home (or even just one room) with smart light bulbs is another way to take advantage of Google Home. You need special light bulbs to make these work, and they are a lot more expensive than your average light bulb. We use The smart LEDs from Philips Hue in our bedroom. It’s really nice when I read in bed with the lights on and start to get sleepy. I just have to say “Hey Google, turn off the lights.” Just say to turn the light back on “Hey Google, turn on the lights.” You can also specify the brightness and dimming and change the color.

Google Home now supports a number of lamps in addition to Philips Hue such as Lifix and others. To add a new bulb, make sure your app is up to date, tap Add> Set up device New devices The nextFrom there, follow the onscreen instructions.

Cool or reheat

We invested in one Nest thermostat for our home this year and if you are as picky about the temperature as I am, I highly recommend. After you add the device to your Google Home appyou can ask Google to set your thermostat to a certain temperature. You can also make incremental changes (eg “OK, Google, increase the temperature 1 extent

You can also operate the thermostat from the app, talking is not necessary (Google Home app> choose the thermostat icon> change the temperatureOne of my favorite parts about the Nest is that it learns how to like and adjust your temperature. For example, our Nest gets cooler in the evening before going to sleep and warms up again before we go to work. The Nest can also remind you to replace your air filter.

An added bonus when setting an alarm

Asking Google to wake you up in the morning is a little easier than setting the alarm on your phone’s clock or – gasp – a really clock. Just say, ‘Hey Google, set my alarm for …’ and give your desired time. The alarm will go off and to turn it off, you just have to say it “stop.”

You don’t have to hand in at night to use the alarm clock, of course. You can also say ‘Hey Google, set a timer for …’ leaving your hands free while exercising, cooking or coloring your hair. To silence the alarm, just say “stop.” You don’t have to say “Hey Google or OK Google” therefor.

Music, news and podcasts, oh my!

To play your favorite podcasts, make sure your favorite music app – YouTube Music, Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora and Deezer are supported – is linked to your Google Home app. From there you can ask Google to play a specific song or genre (eg ‘Hey Google, play’ 90s rockIf you like a song, you can ask Google to save it in the app. To end your tunes ‘Hey Google, stop the music’ is your sense.

You can also use the smart speaker with podcasts, but then you have to ask for one specifically (eg “… play My Favorite Murder”If you stopped listening in the middle of an episode, on Google Home or on your phone, it picks up where you left off. If you want to hear the headlines, you can customize your favorite news sources in the Google Home app and change the order in which they play. Most news outlets have a podcast, so you can ask Google to play that too.

Receive the weather forecast for today and next week

Do you need an umbrella today? Did it just get really cold? Ask Google what the weather is like and it will give you the current temperature and an overview for the rest of the day, wherever you are. Google can also provide further forecasts if you ask for the weekend or next week.

Game time

Google has a few games – I’d recommend trying Mad Libs, Lucky Trivia, or Song Quiz first. These can be fun board games or a great way to keep kids busy on a rainy afternoon.

Movies playing nearby

The days of calling the cinema and listening to a recording read titles are long gone. If you ask for it What movies are playing? Google will list a few titles and ask which movie interests you. From there, Google can help you pick a time and tell you how to buy tickets through Fandango at the nearest theater.
