The IRS says you qualify for a coronavirus stimulus control but it hasn't arrived yet. So what's the delay on your payment? It is too early to worry. A handful of circumstances can cause delays. These aid payments are part of a bill to offer eligible US residents a maximum of $ 1,200 each to help offset the increasing economic effects of the pandemic. The federal agency has already made about 140 million of these one-time payments to individuals worth $ 239 billion, with about 10 million checks to go.

If you are eligible for a check, you will receive your money as a direct deposit to your bank account if you had set that before the close of May 13 as a paper check by mail or as a posted prepaid debit card .

The payment process has sometimes been bumpy with CNET readers reporting to the IRS that their checks had been emailed or deposited weeks ago, but they still haven't received them, or they updated their bank details in April using the IRS Get My Payment portal and still can't see the status of their payment.

If you've checked the IRS Get My Payment portal and haven't found the answers you're looking for. Here's what we know about the possible reasons why your check takes so long to get to you.

Check if you are really eligible

This is who is eligible for a stimulus payment :

  • You are a single US resident and have adjusted gross income of less than $ 99,000 [19659019] You file the head of a household and earn less than $ 146,500
  • You file together without children and earn less than $ 198,000
  • You are the parent of a child aged 16 or younger [19659022] Keep up to date with the coronavirus pandemic.

The IRS has scheduled your payment for later in the year

While the IRS has already made 140 million payments, it has a whopping 10 million more to go. In April, the IRS estimated that it could take up to 20 weeks to send each payment, and it prioritizes the payment schedule by first sending checks to those with the lowest incomes. Depending on your adjusted gross income, you may have to wait weeks and possibly several months, according to the IRS plan.

The IRS Sends Your Payment by Post

The IRS has put a lot of pressure on getting everyone who was eligible for a check who signed up for direct deposit on May 13 . The benefit of direct deposit, the IRS said, was that you would receive your check sooner than by mail. Now that the deadline has passed, the IRS said it will send paper checks and debit cards to those for whom they don't have bank records from late May through June.
