If you have a huge amount of money burning a hole in your pocket, and have a desire to own a piece of personal computer history, check out eBay. There, an anonymous seller posted an original Apple 1 computer built by Steves Jobs and Wozniak in 1976. It is in fantastic condition and even comes with a Sony monitor that is accurate on time.
The buy-it-now price is only $ 1.5 million American. For that price, you get a machine verified as authentic by experts that apparently still works with the original power supply and the unmodified motherboard, “no modifications or repairs”. According to the seller, they bought it from its original owner in 1978 while operating a computer store in Montreal. According to the registry, it is the 79th computer the fledgling company has built.
The original Apple 1 had a one megahertz processor from MOS Technology, 4 kilobytes of memory (expandable to 48), and 456 kilobytes of storage space. For a small perspective, 456kb is not enough to save the image at the top of this article. The computers shipped in wooden plyboard cases cut out by hand, with an old-fashioned toggle switch acting as an on / off switch. Only a few dozen Apple 1 PCs are known to still exist; working computers typically go for between $ 300,000 and $ 900,000 in the collectors market, so it’s well above the premium.
