Farewell iPod Shuffle

Apple & # 39; s iPod Shuffle was a popular music player, but it was discontinued in 2017. Thanks to the capacity of 2 GB you could save hundreds of MP3 & # 39; s and other audio files.

Do not despair if you have missed the fourth generation iPod Shuffle or Nano. The Mighty Vibe is there to save the day! With a size of just 1.5 inches square and 1/4-inch thick, the Mighty Vibe can hold your Spotify or Amazon Music playlists and podcasts. You can listen to them wirelessly (or via wired headphones) while you work, train, run or just relax at home.

The Mighty Vibe comes in a very small box, which is great because there is not much in it. You'll find the player, a small & # 39; Start Here & # 39; booklet and a 10-inch charging cable with a USB connector on one end and a 3.5 mm plug on the other.

The booklet is pretty useless for everything that goes beyond connecting the Mighty Vibe to a charger (not included). However, you can download a slightly larger manual and FAQs from the website . You can use almost any mobile phone or tablet charger to charge the rechargeable battery (which gives you around 2.5 hours of music). However, the short charging cord is difficult (more on that later).

The player has few controls, but they are very similar to those of the now-defunct Apple players. The round operating ring has a push button in the middle. The left and right positions on the ring move forward and backward between tracks. The up and down positions increase and decrease the volume. In addition to the Play / Pause functions, the middle button also switches the Mighty Vibe on and off.

The small LED in the top right corner indicates whether the player is being switched on or off or being charged. There is also a small button next to the LED for switching playlists or enabling the shuffle mode.

Setting up the Mighty Vibe is not difficult, but it takes almost an hour for the player to initially charge and synchronize with your Spotify playlists.

Mighty contains no power. Instead, the player comes with a unique 10-inch charging cable with a male USB-A on one end and a 3.5 mm audio plug on the other. You can use a standard wall wart phone / tablet charger to power the rechargeable battery. The first time charging takes about an hour – when the LED turns solid white, you are ready to synchronize your playlists with the device.

If you use one of the Amazon services, you must update the firmware. Currently, only the iOS app supports Amazon music lists. You can also only play your own MP3 & # 39; s if you import them into your Spotify playlists (Amazon Music no longer offers this feature at all).

Updating the firmware and actually getting your playlists and podcasts to the player requires the free app ( available in the App or Google Play stores) .

A large part of the installation process is synchronizing the Mighty Vibe with your playlists via Wi-Fi. I usually listen to Spotify, so I have synchronized three of my playlists, which contain almost 1,000 songs in total. It took about 45 minutes – a little longer than I expected. The player disconnected during synchronization, which delayed the process. It has reconnected automatically, but it probably wouldn't have lasted that long if the synchronization had remained constant.

After you've synced your playlists, you can set up the Mighty app to update your playlists and podcasts daily at a specific time. I really like this feature because I regularly add it to my lists. When you set your playlists to automatic updating, you don't have to manually synchronize them again.

You synchronize your playlists in the Mighty app and you can also set a time for the player to resynchronize your lists every day.

The final step of the installation is pairing the player with Bluetooth headphones or your car stereo. If you want to use the Mighty Vibe with a wired headset, simply connect it to the same 3.5 mm jack that you use to charge the player.

Navigate to the Connections screen in the app to set up the player with Bluetooth headphones or earphones. and then tap the Bluetooth logo. Put your Bluetooth accessory in pairing mode and wait for it to appear on the screen below your Mighty device. Then tap the plus sign (+) next to the accessory (headset or car radio) that you want to connect to.

When pairing is complete, you will see a green check mark next to the device on which the Mighty Vibe is mounted. Your headset or stereo will sound and you are all set! The Mighty Vibe can now play your synchronized playlists from Spotify or Amazon Music.

A Terrific Companion

If you enjoy listening to your Spotify, Amazon Music Unlimited or Amazon Prime Music playlists without your phone or tablet, you will love the Mighty Vibe. It is small, but you can listen to your music without cables. You also do not have to risk losing or damaging your phone or tablet during training or running.

There are, however, a few "buts". The first (and most notable) is that you cannot download and listen to MP3 & # 39; s or other audio files that you have unless you first add them to your Spotify playlists. (Amazon stopped importing MP3's just over a year ago.)

The other "but" is a real pain in the ass, and it's the 10-inch length of the charging cable. The player hangs on the wall when you connect it to an electrical outlet. Mighty offers an extra cable for $ 8. It is no longer than the others, but a spare cord is probably a good idea in case you lose or damage the supplied player. Alternatively you can get a three-foot cable on Amazon for around $ 7.

Finally, it would be nice to have the option to choose which song you want to play. However, unless you create playlists with songs in different order, there is no way to achieve this. It would also require a different display, so it is unlikely that there will be such an & # 39; n upgrade.

Apart from these minor annoyances, I could not find anything else to complain about. For this price, the Mighty Vibe would be an excellent gift for someone who subscribes to one of the supported music services, or for yourself.
