When creating video content for social media, such as a story on Instagram, it is common to add captions or subtitles to the post so that people can watch it silently wherever they are. Doing this by hand is time consuming and frustrating, but Instagram has a solution – a feature to add auto-generated captions to any story you create from your iPhone or Android phone.
Subtitles are still being tested, so you won’t find it in the regular Instagram app for Android or iOS. However, you can see it if you are part of the official alpha or beta programs, available from Google Play and TestFlight in the App Store. Story subtitles are rolling out to select accounts via a server-side update, and not every tester gets it. There is no timeline for a public release yet.
Automatic captioning for the Instagram Stories platform is not something to worry about before recording your story. Instead, use the sticker “(CC) Captions”
The first evidence of the feature in the wild comes from social media adviser Matt Navarra. To add subtitles, tap the sticker button after recording a story and then choose ‘(CC) Captions’. After doing this, Instagram analyzed and transcribed your audio and immediately overlaid the captions over your video.
You can then choose from four different subtitle styles that appear, as well as the usual text color picker that you can access at the top. Once you’ve determined a style, tap ‘Done’ to continue editing your story using Instagram’s other features.
