Bloomberg is internally referred to as an “Explorer Edition” and reports that Apple is debating internally whether the rugged Apple Watch will be released later this year or 2022. If so, it’s likely an additional option, just like the Apple Watch SE or Nike models. But that presupposes that Apple decides to release the product at all; it could come out of the plans instead.
When it releases the Apple Watch Explorer Edition, Bloomberg sources say it will still have the same features and capabilities as a standard Apple Watch. But the exterior would drop today’s aluminum, steel and titanium materials in favor of a rubber casing.
According to Bloomberg, Apple considered releasing a rugged Apple Watch in 2015, but ultimately decided against it. That could easily happen again, of course, and it’s not even clear if Apple has already made working models. For now, we have a code name and description. Even the name can change.
But given Apple’s success in the wearable device market and its desire to take smartwatches to extreme places, it certainly seems like a viable plan. Only time will tell whether Apple decides to move on or move on from a rugged Apple Watch.
