Apple Releases iOS 14.6 RC for iPhone Hours After Announcing Spacial Audio & Lossless Playback for Apple Music «Gadget Hacks



Apple released the RC for iOS 14.6 today, Monday May 17. The update comes just hours after Apple announced Spacial Audio and lossless playback for Apple Music, new features that require iOS 14.6 to run.

Apple released this new update just after 10 a.m. PDT, the company’s default release time for developer updates. If you are a public beta tester, you will not see this update appear on your iPhone yet. Instead, you’ll have to wait for Apple to release iOS 14.6 Public RC, which we expect today at 1pm PDT or tomorrow at 10am PDT.

What’s new with 14.6 RC?

Apple Card family

  • Apple Card can be shared with up to five people, including anyone 13 or older in your Family Sharing group
  • Apple Card Family adds support for families to track expenses, manage expenses with optional limits and controls, and build credit together

Podcasts

  • Subscription support for channels and individual shows

AirTag and Find My

  • Lost mode option to add email address instead of phone number for AirTag and Find My Network Accessories
  • AirTag shows the owner’s partially masked phone number when tapped with an NFC compatible device

Accessibility

  • Voice control users can unlock their iPhone for the first time after a reboot using just their voice

This release also fixes the following issues:

  • Unlock with Apple Watch may not work after using Lock iPhone on Apple Watch
  • Reminders can be displayed as blank lines
  • Call blocking extensions may not appear in Settings
  • Bluetooth devices could sometimes disconnect or send audio to another device during an active call
  • IPhone performance may degrade during startup

How to install iOS 14.6 Developer RC

You need an Apple developer account to update your iPhone. You can get the recovery image from your dev portal and then install it using iTunes or Finder. Otherwise, install the configuration profile and then update it by going to Settings -> General -> Software Update. Finally, you can just wait for it to install automatically if you have a developer profile and “Automatic Updates” is turned on.

How to install iOS 14.6 Public RC

To update your iPhone to iOS 14.6 Public RC, if available, sign up through Apple’s beta site, download and install the configuration profile, then update over the air. If you already have the profile, go to Settings -> General -> Software Update then tap “iOS 14.6” under “Also available” to start installing the latest beta version, or you can wait for it to be installed if “Automatic Updates” is enabled.
