One of the biggest new features is multi-user support. Now the HomePod can recognize the voices of anyone with whom you share your Home devices and perform tasks such as sending messages or playing songs from their Apple Music library (previously the person who set up the HomePod was the main user, and therefore their Apple Music account was used by default).
This is what you must do to set up speech recognition.
Update your HomePod!
First and foremost: software version 13.2.1 must be installed on your HomePod. To ensure that your HomePod is updated, open the Home app on one of your Apple devices and tap the Home button in the upper left corner. Then tap Software update to check for an update. If one is available, install it. It takes approximately 10 minutes to complete this.
If the option to update your HomePod software is dimmed, the person who set up the HomePod must complete the software update or give your account permission to edit and make changes.
Turning on speech recognition
To turn on the speech recognition function of your HomePod, open the Home app on one of your Apple devices. You should see a prompt at the top of the Home tab screen asking if you want to set the new function. Tap it and follow the instructions.
If you do not see the prompt, tap the Home icon in the top left corner, then tap your profile avatar and enable Recognize my voice . Approve all questions and sign up for personalization (so you can send messages, check your calendar and more).
As long as you have set Hey, Siri functionality on your iPhone, your HomePod automatically uses the same information to learn your voice. You don't have to follow another lesson. Give the changes a few minutes to sync with your HomePod and then say "Hey, Siri, who am I?" If set correctly, Siri should identify you. Have each person with whom you have shared your Home devices follow the same directions so that their voice is recognized.
If everything works well, you should be able to turn on speech recognition within a few minutes. If you encounter problems, keep reading.
Troubleshooting installation problems
I have had problems. Many of them.
I have gone through all the steps I have just described, and yet the HomePod refused to recognize my voice. I checked it by asking Siri to identify me, to which she replied by telling me that she had no idea who I was, and the instruction to enable speech recognition in the Home app. I spent a few hours trying everything I could think of, except resetting the HomePod at the factory.
I made sure that the HomePod language was set to the same language as my iPhone (for some reason this setting was forgotten) and I switched the function on and off several times. I have registered my vote again with Hey, Siri on my iPhone – nothing worked.
Finally I went to Twitter to see if anyone managed to make this function work. The answer ? Remove all other family members from the Home app and reset the HomePod to factory settings. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, and it worked.
Reset your HomePod in the Home app by long pressing on the HomePod tile, tapping the gear Settings scrolling down and tapping Reset HomePod > Remove accessory . I also deleted my wife's account from the Home app.
After the HomePod was reset, I reset it, went through the steps to enable speech recognition, and it started working almost immediately. Then I invited my wife again to share our Home devices, and she was able to turn on speech recognition.
With both of us in addition to the HomePod, we were able to use Siri to check and send messages, play different songs from our respective Apple Music accounts, all with Siri who correctly identified us and used the correct accounts.
