Automatic, The Company That Made Your Stupid Car Smart Shuts Down – Review Geek

In 2013, Automatic was launched with a simple idea: by connecting a simple dongle to your car's OBD-II port and connecting it to an app, you could easily make your car smart. Over time, the company has added features such as collision detection, roadside assistance, gas mileage, engine data and more. But now the company is closing, effective May 28.

The beauty of Automatic was its simplicity and ease of use. You bought the Automatic Pro dongle and connected it to your car's OBD-II port (standard on cars since the mid-90s). Then it connected to an app on your phone and essentially turned your vehicle into a smart car.

It provided useful data, such as gas stations nearby, and tracked journeys. Automatic even collected all the collected data to let you know how much your trip cost based on how far you drove, fuel consumption and any gas stations you made. It also provided engine warning information.

Initially, all functions came with the dongle. But after Sirius XM (yes, the satellite radio company) bought Automatic in 201

7, it lowered the price of the dongle and introduced a subscription service. Some features remained free while others required the subscription.

Now the Automatic is closed. In a statement on its site, it attributes the course of events to the ongoing pandemic:

Like many other companies in the United States, the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted our business. Unfortunately, with fewer consumers buying and leasing vehicles and drivers, we see no way forward for our company.

Service will continue through May 28, and users relying on third party integrations will terminate their service on June 28. Automatic advises users to recycle the dongle. The company offers discounts depending on how much you paid for the dongle and how much you used it.

If you have used the Automatic service, you have until June 30 to download all the driving data you want to keep. After that, the company plans to delete the data. It also promises that it will not sell your data until it is deleted.

To pursue a discount, you must visit the Automatic website and submit your request before June 15.
