Best places to buy prescription glasses online in 2019

The number of websites selling prescription glasses and sunglasses has increased enormously in recent years – and it's not just Warby Parker. More and more people are thinking the same thing about prescription eyeglasses they learned about books 25 years ago: it's not only easy to buy glasses and contact lenses online, but it's also a lot cheaper – like in hundreds of dollars in savings.

To that end, we have collected the six best online glasses suppliers that we have found. Please note that all of these services have been used personally by me or someone from the CNET staff. But before we dive into it, please note the following comments, tips and requirements:

  • You must know your prescription and pupillary distance before you use one of these sites ̵
1; so make sure you get a copy the next time you use a hard copy have an eye doctor check your eyes. Once you have that, on most of these sites you can upload a photo of the recipe from your smartphone when you first make a purchase.
  • Most of the sites highlighted here offer a sort of discount for new customers. That means that the first time you buy glasses can be the best deal, so it may pay to try different online retailers before you buy glasses online.
  • See How to buy glasses online and save hundreds of dollars for more tips.

Note that the services discussed here are independently selected by our editors. CNET can get a share of sales if you buy something that is offered on our site.

Several CNET editors have purchased their glasses on Warby Parker, which has a good selection of sharp-looking frames has. Although glasses start at just $ 95 with a prescription for one vision, chances are you are going to pay a little more – around $ 150 – $ 200 – according to my colleague – based on the type of frame you choose , your prescription and lens type (non-prescription sunglasses and glasses start at $ 175, and progressive lenses in both glasses and sunglasses start at $ 295). But the finished products are usually one step higher than what more budget-oriented sites offer.

Remarkable site features : The company's app for iPhone X or newer iPhone models – sorry, there is no Android version yet – allows you to virtually fit different frames (it works surprisingly well) and Even better, you can try out five frames for free for five days at home. Once your five days have passed, place your box in the mail with the prepaid return label. Hopefully you will find at least one style that you like from the five that you have chosen for the home trial.

Warby also has physical stores in some locations in the country if you want to go in and try frames that way. Some of these locations also offer eye tests – and that prescription can be used at Warby or elsewhere.

The online eyewear store also has a "Buy a pair, give a pair" program, so for every pair of glasses you purchase, the company distributes a pair to someone in need, either for free or for "ultra-affordable prices." (See details.)

Shipping times: According to Warby: "It takes 7 to 10 business days for you to be reachable with a single sight glass from the moment we have all your order information. Sunglasses and Progressive & # 39; s take 10 up to 12 business days to reach you. "(These estimates are consistent with the experience of CNET editors who have used the service.)

Austin, Texas, Roka is only recently started making prescription online glasses. The marketing slogan is "The most technically advanced glasses that don't look technical," and the glasses look impressively light, durable and stylish. Just like Warby Parker, these are in the higher end of the online spectacle lens range, with prices of around $ 200 for a prescription pair of prescription glasses, depending on some lens upgrades you could add.

Roka started making athletic glasses for runners, cyclists and triathletes, and many of the prescribed frames are bendable at the ends and have rubber tracks that help you get a safer fit. The frames also come with three sizes of gripping nose pads for a better fit. They are among the most comfortable glasses I have worn – and they really stay on your face.

Remarkable site features : Like Warby, there is a program for home testing. You can try up to four frames at home for up to seven days. The box comes with a prepaid return label – you simply deliver it to a post office to send it back.

Shipping times: Roka does not give general estimates and instead gives you an estimate of the shipping time when individual orders are placed based on the shipping option you choose (the next day, the second day or the land).

GlassesUSA.com was founded 10 years ago in Israel and offers more affordable options than sites like Warby Parker and Roka, with prescription glasses starting at $ 38. But it also features about various high-quality premium brands, including Ray-Ban and Persol. The designer eyeglasses list for more – frames start at $ 89 for standard completed RX glasses – but discounts can lower them in price.

The one-stop shop offers a 65% discount on your first frames, as well as discounts on lens upgrades (photochromic for example), contact lenses and reading glasses. It also recently launched a landing page for flash sales on non-prescription sunglasses. And around large holidays you can look for seasonal offers for men's glasses, ladies' glasses and contact lenses.

Known Site Features : With a virtual "mirror" feature, you can upload your photo to the site and see what glasses on your face shape look like to help you find the perfect pair. And the company raises the try-at-home ante. Instead of sending you just the frames, GlassesUSA sends you the frame with your actual recipe in it, so you can really try it for up to 14 days – although the function is limited to certain frames and lens options. The site also offers a 100% money-back guarantee, so that you can return your glasses if you are not satisfied with what you ultimately get. And although we have seen a few negative online reviews for GlassesUSA.com, the company seems to be diligently following and responding.

Shipping times: Expect 7 to 10 days between ordering and arrival of GlassesUSA.com products, depending on the type of glasses and the shipping option you choose.

What do you do if you already have a few frames that you like, but your recipe is old (or your lenses are scratched) and you just want to replace the lenses? Lensabl is one of the few sites that allows you to submit your own pair of frames and get a new lens on strength. The motto is: "Your frames, our lenses", with prices starting at $ 77 for buying a pair of basic vision lenses. A pair of colored sunglasses start at $ 97.

You upload your prescription online, choose the type of lens you want and then Lensabl will send you a box with a prepaid return label. You simply send them your glasses in the box (shipping is free). First customers receive a 15% discount.

This site is also a good option if you have old glasses that you want to make sunglasses of strength.

Remarkable site features : You can renew your prescription online for $ 40. Not everyone is eligible for the online eye exam – you have to answer a few questions to see if you are eligible – but if you do, Lensabl says: "All you need is your computer, smartphone and about 15 minutes time." Your results will be assessed by an ophthalmologist with a license in your country, who will then provide you with a new prescription via e-mail.

Shipping times: Lensabl promises a lead time of "approximately two weeks" from the time you send your frames to when you receive them back.

Zenni has been around for a while and it was the first site I used to buy glasses online. It is more a budget-oriented site and over the years I got some great deals on cheap glasses, especially when Zenni occasionally sold three or two glasses. I have made both prescription and prescription sunglasses, as well as fellow editor David Katzmaier, who has since graduated from Warby Parker (he said, however, that he would still buy prescription sunglasses from Zenni because they are cheap and robust enough) [19659007] Remarkable site functions : there is a frame-fit "mirror" function with which you can upload a photo and see the frames on your face, as well as a new "virtual" try-on function (made possible by Ditto ) that allows you to see the glasses on your face as you move around using your computer's webcam or your phone's camera. This is comparable to the virtual fitting function that Warby Parker offers.

Shipping times: "Your glasses will be delivered around two weeks after receiving your order," says Zenni. In my experience that sometimes extends to three weeks.

Coastal shares some agreements with online retailer Zenni in the sense that it leads with low prices, a 40% discount for new customers and sporadic two-on-one deals around different holidays. It has no virtual-fit functions, but there is an option to enter the size of your current frames and the site offers options based on those measurements that fit your face well.

Coastal does offer a number of premium brand frames (Ray-Ban, Oakley and others), but that costs your lenses to more than $ 100.

Notable features of the site : Coastal has a philanthropic partnership with the Essilor Vision Foundation to improve the view of people who cannot afford glasses. Coastal says that "for every pair of glasses purchased, glasses will be given to someone in need."

Shipping times: Expected 10 to 14 days.
