Block and report spam in Android messages «Android :: Gadget Hacks

Android Messages, now formally just called “Messages”, has built-in spam protection. However, this won’t receive every spam text message – in fact, you can still receive unwanted texts several times a day even with the feature turned on. Fortunately, you can also manually block numbers.

There are two different ways to do this. One method works from the main menu of the Messages app, while the other works when you are in the chat thread. This will not only block future text messages from that person or bot, but also report the phone number as spam, so the built-in spam protection works a little better.

Method 1
: Block spam from the main menu

The first method is quite simple, but not that easy to discover. To block a spam text, long press the chat thread in the main Messages menu. Then tap the circle with a line through it (aka the “No” symbol) and you will get a popup. Make sure “Report Spam” is enabled here, go ahead and tap “OK”.

Now the spammer can no longer make your phone beep by sending a message. Future messages from this number will also not appear in the main Messages menu. They are just automatically blocked silently in the background. If you also use the Google Phone app, the number will be blocked from calling you as well.

You can find blocked messages by tapping the three-dot menu button in the top right corner of the main Messages app menu, then selecting ‘Spam & Blocked’. If you accidentally blocked a number, you can select the message thread here and then tap “Not spam” at the top of the screen to restore the chat.

Method 2: Block spam from a chat thread

You can also tap on a spam text to open the corresponding chat thread. Here, tap on the three-dot menu button in the top right corner and choose ‘Details’. On the next screen, tap “Block and report spam”, make sure the “Report spam” box is checked and press “OK”.

I’ll mention this again in case you skipped method 1: blocked chats can be found in the “Spam & Blocked” menu, accessible from the three-dot overflow button in the top right corner of the app’s main menu.
