Although the IRS and the Treasury Department stopped sending automatically second stimulus controls on Friday, January 15, some people use the IRS and USPS tracking tools report their checks up to $ 600 made the cutoff on its way. Some of these people also report that instead of one paper checkthey receive them incentive payment as one of the 8 million Economic Impact Payment cards, or EIP cards, that the Treasury is issuing this time.

According to the Treasury, this is twice as many EIPS cards. The IRS told CNET the cards helped them make payments as quickly as possible, although they didn’t explain why.

Either way, we’ve got answers to some of the most common questions you may have about stimulus controls in the form of an EIP card, including its use like this arrives in your mailbox (follow it here). CNET also has guides on how calculate your second stimulus total if you think you still owe money, what to know stimulus controls and SSI and SSDI, how to report missing incentive money to the IRS and how to file missing payments when doing your taxes. Here’s the story on one third stimulus check.

What is an EIP card? What does it mean for stimulus checks?

An economic impact payment card is a prepaid debit card that the U.S. Treasury used to distribute a number of incentive payments among the CARES Act, instead of direct deposit or a paper check. The maps have been issued to some Eligible US Residents for whom the government had no bank details.

These Visa debit cards can be used to make purchases, collect cash from networked ATMs and transfer money to your personal bank account at no cost. If you receive one, after the card arrives, visit the EIP card website to activate it and learn more about how to use it.

Why should I get my second incentive payment on an EIP card instead of a paper check or direct deposit?

About 8 million people get their incentive payment on a prepaid debit card, called an EIP card, which looks like this.

For the first round of payments, those eligible received the initial incentive payment by EIP card rather than by check whether they had filed their taxes but the IRS did not have their bank account information to hand and whether the tax return had been processed by IRS service centers in Andover, Massachusetts or Austin, Texas, according to a Treasury press release.

It is not clear what the significance of those particular service centers is, and the Treasury has not responded to our request for more information.

For the second round of payments that began in late December, the IRS said they would send a paper check or debit card in the mail if they didn’t have bank details to hand. The IRS said some people who received a paper check last time could receive a debit card this time, and some people who received a debit card last time could receive a paper check.

How much incentive money can be loaded on my EIP card?

Receiving your payment via an EIP card would not change this the amount you would receive – it’s just another format of the same payment.

The amount of money you are allocated second stimulus control will depend on your AGI, or adjusted gross income, your tax returns, along with your tax return status (single versus joint) and how many dependents you have. The maximum amount a single taxpayer (without children) can get is $ 600. You can Calculate your second stimulus check total here.

You can also find out who counts as a dependent on your taxes, how old one must depend to receive a separate incentive payment and the stimulus check situation for older adults, people in the SSDI program, US Citizens Abroad and people living in US territories.

When will I receive my EIP card now that a second stimulus check is being sent?

While the IRS started sending second stimulus controls By direct deposit and paper check on December 30, it didn’t start sending payments with an EIP card until January 7. However, this is much faster than the first round: CARES Act were not over until March, the first EIP cards did not go out until mid-May.

The IRS has said it would send all second-round check payments by January 15, as specified in The December Incentive Act. You can track your incentive money (in any form) with a tool from the IRS if you want to see if your payment has met the deadline.

What happens if I have not received my EIP card by January 15th?

Every second stimulus check payment that does not go to the intended recipient by the January 15 cutoff will have to claim it with a Refund Discount as part of the tax season, which begins February 12. In some cases – for example, if you received a confirmation letter from the IRS that your money was sent but your EIP card never arrived – you may need to report the missing funds or any errors to the IRS.

How will my EIP card be delivered?

If you be eligible for a second stimulus check and your payment made the closing, the IRS said your EIP card would arrive at the address listed on your latest tax return in a white envelope marked with the United States Treasury seal. The card has the name Visa on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank, NA, on the back. Some literature identifies the card as the payment for the economic impact.

Because the envelope containing the first EIP card was not clearly marked, some people reportedly threw the letter away without opening it during the first round of incentive payments (if you think this has happened to you, we have tips for getting your payment below). The IRS said for eligible people who will not receive a direct deposit to view their post for the card in the next few weeks – but it could be easier to sign up for this free USPS service.

Note: If you have moved, you must do this notify the IRS and USPS of your new address.

Can I receive my incentive money via direct deposit instead?

If the IRS has your bank account information handy, you probably would receive the payment by direct deposit instead of an EIP card. Since the first incentive checks were sent, more effort has been made to get people who don’t have a bank account to get one for this purpose. But at this point, there is nothing you can do to change your delivery method.

Will the IRS notify me that an EIP card is coming?

With the first incentive payments, the IRS sent a letter about your money to your last known address within 15 days of the payment being made. The letter contained information on how you got the money (check or direct deposit or EIP card) and how to report it if you did not receive payment. It will do the same for the second round of payment. But beware: there have been many stimulus check scams go around. Before giving anyone your information, visit IRS.gov to make sure your letter is legitimate.

What happens if my EIP card is lost or destroyed?

If you have lost or destroyed your EIP card, you can request a free replacement through MetaBank customer service. The replacement fee will be waived the first time.

You don’t need to know your card number to request a replacement. Simply call 800-240-8100 and choose the second option from the main menu, according to the IRS website.
