1; or explored different messaging platforms – you’ll find that while the meaning of emoji is generally consistent, the illustrations vary depending on your device’s operating system. When you are bored with the built-in emoji keyboard on your phone, we’ve got some good news: there are dozens of emoji keyboards you can download and use, offering everything from animated emoji to gifs and stickers to themes.

Here are five emoji keyboards for this iPhone and Android to see if you want to spice up your text messages.

If you have an Android phone, Gboard may already be installed for you. (I am using a Google Pixel 5, and Gboard is my default keyboardIn addition to useful features like swiping to text, Gboard lets you search for emoji, keep track of your most used emojis, add stickers (even animated ones) to your texts, and use gifs and old-fashioned emoticons. Gboard is free to download for Android and iOS.

To use Gboard, install it from the App Store or Google Play. After that, users need to go to Settings and tap Switch (Android) or Get started (iOS). If you’re downloading for iOS, you’ll have to manually turn on many of the permissions to use most of Google’s features.

SwiftKey learns your writing style, even your slang, nicknames and favorite emoji – which, along with the customization options, sets it apart from other keyboards. You can add themes to your keyboards for free, as well as individual themes and theme packs from the SwiftKey Store.

SwiftKey also offers emoji prediction (for example, typing ‘love’ may display a ❤️ emoji in the prediction bar). However, you can turn this off in the app’s settings.

To enable SwiftKey and make it your default keyboard on Android, go to Settings> Language & input> SwiftKeyTap to set it up on iOS General> Keyboard> Add new keyboardYou will see all the keyboards you have installed on your device. Choose SwiftKey to enable it. To make it your default, click Edit and drag it to the top of the list.

You can use Bitmoji with other keyboards, such as Gboard.

If you’ve used Snapchat, you’ve probably seen Bitmoji – little cartoon avatars styled after the user. Bitmoji also ties in with other apps besides Snapchat. For example, Gboard is the default keyboard on my Pixel 5, but you can choose it Install Bitmoji from the toolbar. It adds another level of personalization as your Bitmoji is incorporated into almost every sticker.

The keyboard is free for iOS and Android. To set it up on Android, you can do it manually or through the Bitmoji app. After signing in to the app, tap the globe icon to open the Keyboard tab and follow the instructions to enable the keyboard. Fleksy is a free keyboard download with in-app purchases for Android and iOS. The keyboard has thousands emoji – with recommendations based on your texting habits – and gifs to traverse your texts. Fleksy has keyboard themes such as anime and chameleon as well as built-in mini apps such as memoji stickers, typing games, various keyboard sounds and spell checker.

To use Fleksy in iOS, download the app, choose Settings> General> Keyboard> Enable FleksyYou must also grant full access to use all the functions of the keyboard. For Android you continue Settings Languages ​​and input> Virtual (or on-screen keyboard)> Manage keyboards.
