You can choose not to receive a child discount.

If you expect it extensive child discount money, you will receive your first monthly payment in just two months – assuming you are eligible and have eligible dependents. Starting in July, you will receive seven payments equal to up to $ 3,600 per child. But it depends on your child’s age and your age adjusted gross income this year. However, you can opt out of the monthly payments if you prefer to receive one large payment with your tax refund in 2022.

You need to change your preference when the IRS portal opens if you don’t want to receive monthly payments. We explain what you need to know about waiving the smaller child discount. Here are also some ways to spend the money from your child discount when you get it.

As a side note, if you’re still waiting for you $ 1,400 stimulus check or your “plus-up” payment, here is how to track it down. Also your state can owe you hundreds of dollars – it takes two minutes to check. Plus, here’s how Biden’s new incentive plan could bring you even more money.

Three reasons to forgo the monthly child discount

If you prefer your child discount payments in one fixed amount instead of seven smaller payments, you can choose to waive the payments in July. Here are a few reasons why you may want to unsubscribe:

  • Next year you would rather have one large payment.
  • You know your circumstances will change, and you don’t want to bother with updating your information in the portal the IRS plans to open before July 1. (The portal allows you to notify the IRS of any significant changes affecting you.)
  • You’re worried that the IRS will accidentally overpay you, and you don’t want to worry about paying that money back.

What happens if you decide to unsubscribe from the monthly checks?

Keep in mind that if you opt out of receiving monthly child tax credits from July through December, you won’t get your full payment – or no payment at all – until the IRS processes your 2021 tax return next year. Payment in full will then be received with your tax refund, or can be used to offset any taxes you owe; you are in a similar situation to those people who had to claim missing stimulus controls on their taxes this year.

So if you have a child aged 5 or younger at the end of 2021 and your income meets the requirements, you will receive a total of $ 3,600 when you file your tax returns in 2022. However, if you choose to receive six monthly payments this year, you will get $ 300 a month and another $ 1,800 with your tax refund. You can use our child discount 2021 calculator to estimate how much you should receive.

If you don’t update your information in the portal and you submit your taxes before the May 17 deadline, you will automatically receive the monthly payments. More on how to unsubscribe below.

Stimulus Plus-Up Payments: What You Need to Know

You use the IRS portal to opt out of monthly payments when it is available

On July 1, the IRS will open a portal specifically designed for the new child discount payments. You can also use it to opt out of receiving multiple payments this year. We asked the IRS exactly how to do this. We know the IRS will have paper forms available for those who do not have Internet access. “We will make forms and instructions for the forms available to people who wish to unsubscribe,” IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said on April 13.

We are not sure what the portal will look like or what the process will be, but we do know that it can be used to update your information with any changes made since you last filed your tax return. For example, if you have had a new baby in 2021 or have received a new one qualified depending – the IRS would not have this information on file yet. Or maybe your income has changed recently.

We’ll know about the details you can change once the IRS portal is up and running – the IRS doesn’t have the resources to build the portal until after tax season.
