How much is the extended child discount worth to new parents?

The child discount in 2021 has changed since last year, in particular the increased benefit amount. The 2021 new newborn credit caps at $3,600 per eligible child, and decreases from there as your income increases. The IRS uses several AGIA phase-out limits (when your income is too high to qualify for the full amount of credit) for individual applicants, heads of household and married couples applying jointly. CNET built a calculator to determine your specific payment eligibility, which you should definitely try especially if you also have older children (children from 6 years are eligible for less), share custody or do not have US citizenship.

The IRS has promised to set up two online portals by July 1. The first portal allows taxpayers to report any change in status (dependants, income) all year round. The second portal is for those who normally don’t file a tax return. These families can use the portal to ensure their information is correct, including adding 2021 babies as qualified dependents.

We don’t have much information yet about how the portals will work and whether they will be available before July 1 (the IRS’s resources are still allocated to processing tax returns), but when they are revealed new parents will be able to use them to claim next of kin in time to receive the child tax credit checks they owe. Even if you go this route, you may receive more than half of your payment next tax season, depending on the timing.
