A zippered storage bag, rubber band, water and CLR cleaning solution or plain white vinegar – plus an hour – equals no clogged shower head.

Dale Smith / CNET

If the flow of water from your ever downpour has only recently become a trickle, the build-up of minerals from hard water is probably the cause. Fortunately, you can solve this problem with minimal effort – all you need is a few common household necessities and an hour to get science to do the work for you.

First collect a food bag with zipper (such as the Ziploc or Hefty brands) and a sturdy rubber band (the thicker the better). Then find a calcium, lime and rust-cleansing cleaning solution (such as the CLR brand) – or a little white vinegar that works just as well – and then set it aside for about 60 minutes when nobody can shower. [19659006] The problem arises from hard water, which, according to the Water Quality Association, contains high levels of dissolved solids – mainly calcium and magnesium. Over time, these chemicals bond with the metal and plastic in your shower head, creating an accumulation that appears around the water spouts like scraps.

As this plumbing plate builds up over time, the holes begin to close, creating back pressure that reduces water release. If it is ignored, it can eventually completely stop your spout. Shower filters are a way to prevent the problem but to open an existing blockage, you don't have to worry about calling a plumber, buying expensive replacement hardware or spending an entire afternoon on it. to solve it.

Here you can read how to effortlessly degrade your shower head.

1. Collect your cleaning supplies

First collect your supplies. If you have a small shower head, a sandwich-sized bag is sufficient, but for larger hardware you may need to take out a gallon bag. You need a rubber band to tie it in, and water can become heavy, so use a strong one. The type used to hold products like asparagus or broccoli together is perfect, but your standard elastic from an office supplies store is adequate, although you may need more than one, especially for a gallon bag.

For the cleaning solution you need a 50/50 solution of either CLR household cleaner (available at most supermarkets, Walmart and Amazon) or white vinegar (the stuff in your closet is sufficient) and regular shower water.

2. Soak away the dirt

Half fill the bag with CLR or white vinegar and also place the shower head in the bag. Secure it with the rubber band (s), gently turn the water just enough under the shower to fill the bag for the rest and mix the solution. Whatever you do, do not run the shower at full power, otherwise the sudden pressure may unintentionally launch your plastic bag into your bathroom.

Then set a timer for 60 minutes, on your telephone or with the help of your smart home assistant. Here is how to set multiple timers with Google Home and with Amazon's Alexa on Echo devices . Now go and relax the next hour with a podcast .

3. Wipe, rinse and (hopefully) no repeat

After your timer goes off, remove the bag from your shower head and drain the cleaning solution down the drain. Throw the bag in the trash and wipe your shower material with a damp cloth.

Then the moment of truth is: turn on your shower (this time in full) and see how much more powerful and even it radiates. If for some reason there are still a few hidden spouts, feel free to repeat this process. But for most clogged shower heads, a round should suffice.
