Apple’s HomePod mini has drastically downsized the smart speaker, making it an orb-like personal companion designed to communicate with other Apple devices, help you manage your schedule, and play tunes while you work. The results have been impressive (and much more affordable), but some users have still had problems getting the speaker to work properly or its main functions.
The good news is that there are workarounds and workarounds for most of these problems. These are the main problems people are reporting and what solutions we have found effective.
Siri keeps reporting that there is no internet connection
This is one of the most common issues with the mini, and there are several things to try if Siri keeps telling you that the device won̵
First, restart your wifi router. If your router automatically switches devices between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, see if there is any way you can disable this option for your mini as it can get confused if you keep switching between bands switched. Then reboot your mini – when you open the Home app and go to HomePod Mini settings, you should see an option to reboot it here. The Home app can also provide warnings about why the mini is not connected to Wi-Fi and what the solution might be.
If the problem persists then try restoring your HomePod to factory settings and starting over. You can manually reset this way by unplugging the power cord, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it back in. Wait five seconds, then press and hold the top of the HomePod mini with your finger. The mini’s lights will turn red – keep pressing your finger until Siri tells you that the mini is about to reset and you hear three beeps.
However, some HomePods seem to have a permanent problem staying connected to the internet no matter what you do (some features may work, but Siri will keep reporting issues). If your other smart devices are working fine but the mini keeps disconnecting, there may be a faulty device. Call Apple Support, ask them what they think, and see if you can get a replacement under your warranty.
The mini does not respond to voice commands
Start with the basics and make sure the mini is plugged in and turned on. Tap on the top and make sure it’s responsive at all and hasn’t crashed. If manual control doesn’t work, go to the Home app and HomePod Mini settings to find the option Restarting the mini. You may also need to do a full manual reset as described above.
As your manual controls to be the problem is likely with Siri itself. First, press and hold the responsive top of the mini and say, “Turn on Hey Siri.” If that doesn’t work, go to the Home app, select HomePod Mini settings, and then look for the option that says Listen to Hey Siri. Make sure it is turned on.
IPhone transfer capability is not responding
Handoff is the feature that lets you send audio directly from your iPhone to your mini speaker, and it’s ideal when you’re ready to sit in one place – if it works.
First of all, remember the requirements – transfer is primarily designed for the iPhone 11 and above. If you have an older model, transfer may still work, but it is not as reliable and may not work.
Also go to the Home app and check HomePod Mini settings to see if there are any updates. If the mini has an update then apply it and see if this fixes the problem (the 14.2 update in particular solved this problem for many people). Finally, reboot the HomePod mini completely and try using Handoff again.
HomePod mini is trying to connect to the wrong Wi-Fi network or not working with Wi-Fi
Since iOS 12, HomePod devices can automatically retrieve Wi-Fi credentials from your iPhone or iPad and use it to connect to your network. However, if the Wi-Fi information on your other Apple devices is outdated or confusing, your HomePod may be trying to connect to the wrong Wi-Fi network, usually leading to an error. Make sure all Wi-Fi information is correct on your Apple devices and restart to try again.
It may take a while for the mini to find and connect to Wi-Fi if you move it to another room. Give it at least a few seconds to re-establish a connection before using it.
Also note that the mini does not work on “captive” networks such as hotspots in cafes or hotels. If you have connected to one of these networks, you will need to do a full factory reset and reconnect to a traditional Wi-Fi network.
HomePod mini is on but not playing music
Go to the Home app and check Settings to see if there are any updates waiting to be installed. If so, please install and restart. This is another issue that the 14.2 update has fixed for a lot of people especially when it comes to playing Spotify.
HomeKit scenes do not work with HomePod mini
This problem occurs when you create scenes in the Home app, but Siri cannot use them when you get the correct voice command (although they usually work fine from other devices). Move your HomePod closer to your router for the best possible connection and try voice commands again to see if this works.
Unfortunately, HomePods seem to be sensitive to certain mixtures of smart home devices and will struggle to control them even if the scenes work on your iPhone or iPad. You can try a factory reset and reconfigure to see if it helps.
AirPlay crashes when moving audio to mini
First, make sure all affected devices are updated. Users have run into bugs that prevent AirPlay from working with the HomePod mini, and there isn’t much to do other than wait for patches to fix this issue. However, one possible solution is to do a minor reset by turning off your mini, signing out of iCloud, then signing back in to iCloud and turning everything back on.
The mini does not respond when it is first plugged in
If you try to plug in the HomePod mini and only see a permanently spinning orange circle, something is wrong. Make sure you are using the power adapter that came with the HomePod mini in the same box. While other Apple adapters can look same, they are not made to work with the mini, and this spinning orange circle will be the result. Otherwise, it’s time to call Apple Support.
Can’t connect HomePod mini to TV
Unfortunately, only the original major HomePod supports compatible home theater systems, speaker bars, Apple TV 4K, etc. The HomePod mini does. not have this home theater capability because it lacks the spatial and directional audio software that made this connection possible. You can still try to connect to an Apple TV via AirPlay, but the results won’t be very impressive.
The mini does not link for stereo sound
Two HomePod minis can automatically pair with each other when set up and close together. This will not work with a HomePod mini and the original HomePod, only with two minis. If the two don’t automatically connect, try moving the minis closer together and restarting them to see if it helps. If it doesn’t work, unplug both minis and move them to another room, then plug them back in and try pairing in the new room. If paired successfully, they should remain paired and you can return them to their original location.
