Control TikTok with your voice to swipe through videos, view profiles and more on your iPhone «iOS and iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

The TikTok obsession is real. The variety of content is so wide that you can watch a video guide on how to make fried feta pasta while you cook, then a seven-part series about some crazy historical event you never heard of while eating – all in one time frame of a few minutes. And thanks to a hidden iOS feature, you can watch all the TikTok clips you want, even without using your hands.

When you watch video clips on TikTok, you usually swipe your finger through your feed. It’s easy and simple, but if your hands are busy with food, a messy project, or anything else where you don’t want to touch the screen, you can use your voice to scroll through your TikTok feed.

This is possible thanks to Voice Control, Apple̵

7;s accessibility feature for users who have trouble physically interacting with devices or just want to go hands-free. As the name implies, you can control your iPhone with just your voice, and there are many cool things you can do with it, such as unlocking your iPhone with a secret spoken word or phrase.

A few voice commands are to scroll up and down, which is perfect for TikTok – all you need to do is turn on voice control and speak the commands to watch TikTok videos without lifting a finger.

Step 1: Check out the voice control commands

Launch the Settings app and go to Accessibility -> Voice Control -> Customize Commands. Here you’ll find hundreds of existing voice commands, and you can use a few to browse videos on TikTok. To find them, first tap “Basic Gestures”.

The commands we are interested in are “Scroll down” and “Scroll up”, which allow you to go up or down one page. Unlike the “Swipe down” and “Swipe up” commands in voice control, scrolling has been fixed, while swipe emulates a common swipe on the screen, so you can scroll down or down an entire page. TikTok has fixed pages for each video, so the scrolling voice commands are the way to go.

When you enter the preferences of a voice command, you have the option to request confirmation, which means that your iPhone will ask you to confirm the action after you say the voice command; you should leave this turned off for faster scrolling. You will also see an optional phrase that you can say aloud to scroll, namely “Scroll page down” or “Scroll page up”.

Step 2: Turn on voice control

If you haven’t turned on voice control yet, you can easily turn it on in several ways:

  • Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Voice Control and turn on the “Voice Control” switch.
  • Ask Siri to “turn on voice control”. (Long press the side or home button to activate Siri or say ‘Hey Siri’ if that’s on.)
  • Set up an accessibility shortcut. Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Accessibility Shortcut and check “Voice Control”. After that, every time you click the side or home button three times, voice control is turned on or off. If you have assigned multiple accessibility features to the shortcut, you will need to select them from the menu after clicking three times.

A blue microphone icon will appear in your status bar to indicate that your iPhone is now actively listening for commands.

Step 3: Swipe through TikTok hands-free

Now open TikTok; you can do that as you normally would, or you can say “Open TikTok” and Voice Control will take you straight to your TikTok video feed. In the feed, say “scroll down” to see the next video (below the current one) or “scroll up” to see the previous video (above the current one).

Videos in TikTok are in place and take up the entire page (unlike Instagram), so saying one of the commands will give you a completely different video above or below the video you just watched.

After you say a voice command, a confirmation warning appears at the top of the screen to let you know it worked. If this is bothering you, go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Voice Control and turn off the “Show Confirmation” switch.

Other voice commands you can use on TikTok

There are more things you can say to control TikTok if you’re interested. For example, if you want to like a TikTok video using just your voice, say “double tap”, and Voice Control double tap the center of the screen to like the video you are watching. But it will say the same not undo the like.

You can also say the following, and it is just the tip of the iceberg. You can check out all of the available voice control gestures, as shown above, to find one that might work, and you can even create your own custom command.

  • Tap once to pause or play the video clip.
  • “Swipe left” to view the user profile.
  • “Swipe right” to return to the video from the user profile.
  • Tap comment to open the video’s comments (and swipe down to close).
• “Tap share” to open sharing options (and “swipe down” to close).
  • “Turn up the volume” to hear the sound of the video better.
  • “Turn down the volume” to lower it if it is too loud.

Step 4: Turn off voice control

The annoying thing about Voice Control is that it’s always listening, so it’s easy for you or someone else to accidentally trigger a voice command on your iPhone that does something unexpected. You probably only want to turn on voice control while browsing TikTok, so you can easily turn it off when you’re done. The best way to turn off voice control is to use voice control itself:

  • Say “Turn off voice control,” then say “tap Run” when the prompt appears.

But you also have the normal ways, which are the opposite of the ones in step 2 above:

  • Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Voice Control and turn off the “Voice Control” switch.
  • Ask Siri to “Turn off voice control”.

The blue microphone symbol is no longer in your status bar.
