What We Know About Another Stimulus Control From The IRS

As the US economy continues to weaken as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, pressure is mounting in Washington to approve another round of support for individuals and families. The House of Representatives has already proposed a second stimulus package and the Senate can soon start with a package and make a final decision within a month. Senate leader Mitch McConnell said this could be the last stimulus check, according to CNBC.

Details on the prospects for a second stimulus check are still in development, but we are splitting the current proposal for another $ 1,200 check for individuals (maximum), extended help for renters and unemployed. We also outline arguments for one against the proposal and what could happen next.

How many stimulus checks have been sent to date?

As of the first week of June, the IRS told CNET it made more than 159 million payments, including 120 million through direct deposit to bank accounts, 35 million by post as paper checks, and another 4 million by post as prepaid debit cards. The agency plans to continue sending checks to those who qualify until the end of the year.

Do you have to pay tax on your stimulus payment? Will this affect your refund next year?

No. You don't have to pay taxes on a stimulus payment you receive from the IRS. The IRS doesn't consider it income, and a payment you receive in 2020 will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2020 tax return next year. It also doesn't count toward determining any benefits you receive from the federal government.

You can spend your stimulus money just like cash. The IRS will only lower the payment to make up for child arrears.

How to use the economic impact payment prepaid debit card

On May 18, the US Treasury said it began shipping about 4 million prepaid debit cards called EIP cards. The Treasury said it sends these cards in place of paper checks to a number of eligible U.S. residents for whom the government has no bank records. We asked the Treasury for clarification on who gets a card versus a paper check.

The Treasury said you can use the card to make purchases, get cash from network ATMs, and transfer money to your personal bank account at no cost. You can also use the card in stores that accept Visa debit cards. Once you have received your EIP card by mail, visit the EIP card page to set it up.

Find the schedule for when you can expect your check

You can use the IRS Get My Payment to see a schedule for your payment. The US Postal Service also has a free service that can inform you when your check arrives by mail . You must register for this.

As part of the 2020 incentive package, you may meet federal government payment requirements.

When will the checks be paid in full?

For those expecting to receive their payments by mail, the IRS will have sent most of the payments in late June. The agency said it would greatly increase the number of checks sent that month. However, by the end of the year, a smaller number of checks may arrive.

If you would like to receive your payment directly to your bank via direct deposit the deadline for providing your bank details in the IRS Get My Payment portal has passed. Those who previously provided the IRS with their bank details can still receive their payment via direct deposit.

The Social Security Administration said that recipients of additional income (SSI) who did not file a declaration for 2019 and 2018 and who do not have a representative beneficiary should have received their electronic payment by the IRS before May 13, or on their Direct Express -Map. For SSI recipients who receive their monthly SSI payment by paper check, the IRS began sending checks on May 15.

Here's what we know about tracking your stimulus payment . If you've moved since the last time you filed your taxes, you can update your address with the IRS here.
