How to use the economic impact payment prepaid debit card

On Monday, the United States Department of the Treasure said it will begin shipping approximately 4 million prepaid debit cards called EIP cards. The Treasury said it sends these cards in place of paper checks to a number of eligible U.S. residents for whom the government has no bank records. We asked the Treasury for clarification on who gets a card instead of a paper check.

The Treasury said you can use the card to make purchases, get cash from network ATMs, and transfer money to your personal bank account without a fee. You can also use the card in stores that accept Visa debit cards.

Once you have received your EIP card by mail, go to the EIP card page to set it up.

Find the schedule for when you can expect your check

You can use the IRS Receive my payment to see a schedule for your payment. The US Postal Service also has a free service that can inform you when your check arrives by mail . You must register for this.

When will the checks be paid in full?

The IRS said 150 million individuals are eligible for payment, and in mid-May, the US Treasury said it had made 140 million payments.

For those expecting to receive their payments by mail, the IRS said it plans to sharply increase the number of payments it sends by mail until the end of May and until June. If you would like to receive your payment directly to your bank via direct deposit the deadline for providing your bank details in the IRS Get My Payment portal has passed. Those who previously provided the IRS with their bank details can still receive their payment via direct deposit.

The Social Security Administration said recipients of an Additional Security Income (SSI) who have not filed a declaration for 2019 and 2018 and who do not have a representative beneficiary must have received their electronic payment by the IRS by May 13 at the latest deposit or via their Direct Express card. For SSI recipients who receive their monthly SSI payment by paper check, the IRS began sending their checks on May 15.

Here's what we know about tracking your stimulus payment . If you've moved since the last time you filed your tax return, you can update your address here with the IRS.

Is the money yours, free and clear?

Yes. You don't have to pay taxes on any stimulus payment you receive from the IRS. Nor is it an advance on your usual tax refund. If you now receive a check, your tax refund for 2019 will not be smaller as a result. You can spend the total of your stimulus money just like cash. The IRS lowers the payment only to make up for child arrears.

How much stimulus money you get depends on your taxes

The total amount of your stimulus check is based on your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from your 2019 federal tax return or – if you didn't file this year – your 2018 application.

If you filed your federal tax return 2019 you can find that figure on line 8b of the federal tax form 2019. It is line 7 on the tax form 2018 1040. Do not create concerns if you didn't submit this year. The United States government has postponed the tax due date [20199007] for 2019 to July 15 due to coronavirus.

Here's Who Eligible For A Stimulus Payment

The amount you receive will depend on your total income in 2019 or 2018. If you qualify, you will receive one payment. This is who is eligible:

  • If you are a single US resident and have adjusted gross income of less than $ 99,000
  • If you file the head of a household and earn less than $ 146,500 [19659032] If you jointly apply without children and earn less than $ 198,000

Read on for how your payment is calculated and how much you can expect. You can also look at this calculator from the Washington Post.

The IRS said that someone who died receiving payment, a non-resident alien, or someone who is incarcerated is ineligible for a check. These payments must be returned when received, the IRS said.

How much do you get as a single taxpayer

A single US resident must have a Social Security number and AGI of less than $ 75,000 to receive the full $ 1,200. The sum decreases as your AGI increases. If your adjusted gross income reaches $ 99,000, you are not eligible for the stimulus.

Heads of Households

If you apply as the head of a household, you will receive the full payment of $ 1,200 if your AGI is $ 112,500 or less, decreasing the amount until you reach $ 146,500.

Couples filing jointly

Married couples filing jointly without children with an adjusted gross income of less than $ 150,000 will receive a payment of $ 2,400 and drop to zero at $ 198,000.

For Children

For each child aged 16 or younger in the family, parents receive $ 500 in compensation. Parents will not receive benefits for children born, adopted, or placed in foster care in 2020 because the benefit is only based on information from your 2019 or 2018 tax return. The IRS said you may be able to claim the child next year for an additional credit on your 2020 tax return. Older children and other dependents may not qualify for a benefit.

If you didn't file federal taxes for 2018, do it now

The IRS said if you have not filed taxes to your federal federation of 2018, which may affect your stimulus control, and urges anyone who has not filed a tax return for 2018. Make sure to include direct bank details when returning.

If you don't normally need to file a tax return, you can still receive a Payment

Many who are not normally required to file a tax return – including seniors, Social Security recipients and disability insurance, and retirees – do not have to file a simple tax return to receive payment, the IRS said.

The IRS said recipients of an additional security income will automatically receive the full payment of $ 1,200 in economic impact without doing anything.

Others, including those who have not filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019 because they are below the normal income limits for filing a tax return, can use the Non-Filers portal to receive their payment. To get started, go to the IRS 'Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here site and tap the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here button. What about social security recipients?

The Department of the Treasury said that social security beneficiaries who usually do not have to file a tax return do not have to file an abbreviated tax return to receive payment. The IRS said automatic payments should already come for social security, survivors or disability insurance recipients. benefits and railway pension benefits.

What about those who receive federal benefits and have children?

The IRS said those who receive federal benefits have dependent children and were not required to file a tax return in 2018. or 2019 had to take action in late April or early May to receive full payment this year.

Without filing this information on the due date, the IRS is giving you $ 1,200 this year and the additional $ 500 per eligible child with your tax year 2020 return – about a year from now.

SSI and VA beneficiaries had until May 5 to update the IRS.

The update deadline for those receiving social security, survivors or incapacity for work or railway pension benefits was April 22. The IRS said recipients in those groups are scheduled to receive checks.
