Apple Music’s Replay feature is worthless. Aside from not being very accessible, it offers a fraction of your history compared to Spotify Wrapped, which takes a deep dive into what you’ve been listening to for the past year. Not only that, but Spotify packs data into images that you can share on social media. While you could share Replay screenshots, there are better options for Apple Music users.
One such option is the “My Year in Music” shortcut created by RoutineHub user mmd1080. This shortcut looks at all the music in your library that you’ve played in the last year, then randomly selects albums and creates a simple yet attractive collage using the cover art. You can then save the image to your Photos app, share it with people and apps, or even create a personalized playlist.
It may not be as accurate as the Replay feature due to limitations in scraping information from Music, but it looks at your personal music library as well as Apple Music songs you̵
While not technically required, the “My Year in Music” shortcut is optimized for iOS 14. If you’re still running iOS 13, you may have some issues. You also need the Shortcuts app (if you removed it for some reason, you can always reinstall it from the App Store). To ensure that you can access the shortcut link below, make sure that “Allow Untrusted Shortcuts” is enabled in Settings -> Shortcuts.
You don’t need an Apple Music subscription to use this shortcut, but if you do pay or have a free trial, you’ll only get results from the music you’ve added to your library, because that’s where the album art is retrieved from. Likewise, if you own the songs in your music library, they must also have album art.
Step 1: Add the ‘My Year in Music’ shortcut
You can download the “My Year in Music” shortcut directly from the link below or from RoutineHub. While the direct link works fine, RoutineHub offers the most up-to-date version, which can fix issues or add new features. At the time of writing, version 1.1.2 is the latest.
Once you select ‘Get Shortcut’ you will be redirected to the Shortcut app. In that case, review the workflow and tap “Add untrusted shortcut” at the bottom, which will add the shortcut to your library.
Step 2: Give the shortcut access to your library
Now is the time to run the “My Year in Music” shortcut and create your cover artwork collage. In the Shortcuts app, under the “My Shortcuts” tab, find the shortcut and tap it to run it. The first time you do this, you will be prompted to access your music library. Tap “OK” to continue. It can’t access your Apple Music account – just everything in the Music app’s library.
Step 3: Create a visual for your last year of music
After giving him access to the library, give the shortcut a few seconds to analyze your listening habits and create your collage. When it’s done, your image will appear as a four-by-four grid with albums containing your most listened to songs, along with the text ‘Year in Music’. Tapping the Share button will give you the option to share the photo, “Save Image” and more. Press “Done” to continue.
Step 4: Share the image or create a playlist
Even though it may seem like you’re done, there are a few other options you can choose from if you want. A menu will pop up after you click “Done” where you can tweet the image, post it to Facebook, send it via Messages, or share it elsewhere (like in the previous screenshot).
However, there is one option that stands out: “Create Playlist.” If you tap it, you can create a playlist in the Music app with one random song from each album in the collage or the entire album.
Step 5: View your year in the music playlist
If you create a playlist of your Year in Music image, you can easily view it in the Music app. Go to the “Library” tab and select the “My Year in Music” playlist below Recently added or from the folder “Playlists”.
Customize the shortcut (optional)
Like any shortcut you add to your iPhone, it can be further customized if you know what you want and how to customize the workflow’s actions. For example, you can fine-tune which artwork appears in the image, and you can remove or add a “stop” option to the menu that appears after you press “Done” on the image.
Customize the shortcut for different illustrations
Not happy with your ‘Year in Music’ artwork? Running the shortcut a second or third time will generate other artwork as it will pull things randomly. If you’d like it a bit more customized, you can also go to the shortcut and customize it to use artwork from your most recently played albums.
To do this, tap the ellipse (•••) button in the top right corner of the “My Year in Music” card. Then scroll down until you find it Music action, which says ‘Find all music where’ at the top. Next, tap on ‘Random’ next to sort on and choose Last Played Date. Back in the Music action, tap on “Last First” next to To orderand then click ‘Done’ at the top right.
You can also play with the options above and choose something like “Name” or “Release Date” to get different versions of your Year in Music.
Delete or edit the menu
If the Share button on the image is enough for you, and you don’t have any plans or uses for the menu that appears next, then you can remove it altogether or add an option to exit the menu in case you might find it later want to use. In the shortcut’s actions, look for the only thing List action box, delete it and everything after it and click “Done”.
To add a “quit” option, go to the Scripting box for “Choose from menu” that is directly below it List action. Then tap “Add New Item”, name it something like “Close” and scroll to the bottom of the workflow. You should see “Quit” down there. Now search for and add the action “Close Shortcut”, then drag it to the right below the “Close” box. Tap “Done” to save. The next time the menu appears, you can tap “Exit” to exit the shortcut.
