Cult movie escape from the 1980s from New York was actually mainly filmed in
Now a Sci-Fi staple, the term "earth movement" originally referred to?
Answer: St. Louis
Despite the title of the movie, Escape from New York wasn't filmed in New York City. The film was in fact filmed almost entirely in the city of St. Louis for reasons that, when viewed through the lens of the present, are not immediately apparent.
Not only was St. Louis, a financial and logistical nightmare photographed in New York City, a rather compelling bit of grim realism that came pro deo for director John Carpenter and the permanent crew. A huge fire in 1976 had severely damaged parts of the city; while that disaster was a tragedy for the people of St. Louis, it gave those parts of the city exactly the kind of emptiness and wear that Carpenter was looking for to create his vision of New York City that became a prison. The combination of already sandy sets and a flexible recording schedule made St. Louis a natural background for the cult classic.
