Just like in our own world, everything in Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City comes at a price. In this futuristic world, you won’t get far without enough money, or in this case Eurodollars or “eddies”. The world is big and open enough to make money in all sorts of ways, but if you are pressed for time – or if you just have your eye on a new weapon, piece of clothing, car or something else you just can’t live without – you’ll want to know how to make that sweet money ASAP.
Like many open-world RPGs, including CD Projekt Red’s own Witcher series, you start with little to no cash to splash around. If you know how to earn a decent wage right away, those early hours when you̵
Loot them all
This should be your natural instinct for getting into an open-world RPG, but the importance of looting should be mentioned. Night City’s world is incredibly dense and detailed, meaning there are tons of places to find valuable loot. You will naturally want to pick the pockets of every enemy you take down. Even if you’re going for a more pacifist style of play, looting is a great source of income early on – check every searchable box, closet, and other container you can. Just because an item is classified as clutter doesn’t mean it’s not worth sticking to if you have the space. Everything can be sold in Night City, and the junk you find all has a value. Be especially wary of junk jewelry. These can produce 750 swirls each if you manage to get your hands on one.
Along with looting is selling. Junk can all be sold without worry unless you want to split it up for components, but you shouldn’t overlook everything else you can strip and sell as well. Guns and clothing can all be stolen from bodies and sold for a high price, let alone the bullet holes or blood stains they likely have on them. Keep in mind that all items you have in stock have a weight value associated with them. Once you are overweight, sort your stash and throw out anything that isn’t worth its weight.
Speaking of breaking down junk, the components you create and collect can all be turned into more useful and valuable items as you improve your skills in the skill tree. Most of the things you can make early on are not worth a ton, but are better than the leftovers you’d otherwise get for the cheap mess. It won’t get you rolling in the eddies, but it’s a valuable source of income if you already have junk and components in stock anyway.
Take side jobs
Obviously, you are paid well for doing the main story missions in Cyberpunk 2077, but there are only so many of them and if you spend a lot they won’t really put in your pockets. That’s where the absolutely tremendous amount of side jobs and activities come in. Fixers are your contacts in Night City for taking on most of the minor side activities in the game known as contracts and appearances. There are several Fixers to find and meet, so get to know as much as you can to take on more of these side jobs. However, pay attention to what you get from each job. Not all pay out in cold, hard eddies. You may get an item or, worst of all, nothing at all for your problems.
One of the early side activities that the city offers you is known as NCPD Reported Crimes. You will see these pop up on your map and they can be completed in almost no time depending on the type of crime taking place. Ongoing attacks tend to be fastest, with gang activities often longer and more dangerous. This method kills two birds with one stone, as you earn money and XP by completing them. Not to mention that you’re always free to loot everything and everyone around you once the job is done.
Gun for Hire is another lucrative gig that you should watch if you’re more interested in the aggressive and combat-oriented aspects of Night City life. As the name suggests, these gigs charge you with tracking down a specific target in town and taking it down, dead or alive. However, the target will always have a backup, so be prepared for some resistance. However, all that extra protection just means more bodies you can loot afterwards.
One of the actual side quests that you can access once you hit the game’s second act should be done ASAP if you are experiencing eddies. Called Epistrophy, this quest involves doing some work for Night City’s AI taxi company known as Delamain. Your job is to locate and return different taxis scattered around the city. While the quest as a whole takes quite a long time, especially if you decide to put everything else aside to complete it, you get paid for every mission you restore, so you can leave it if and when you want to continue and still be rewarded.
Hack like a pro
You are free to build as you wish Cyberpunk 2077. You can go full shooter or brawler, or be the more sneaky and intelligent type. Whichever path you choose, it is a must to invest up to at least level five in intelligence and unlock the Advanced Datamine benefit in the Breach Protocol. Not only is hacking super useful throughout the game so even a low level will help you, but getting this perk will increase the amount of money you earn for every entry point you hack. Entry points are located in gang hideouts all over Night City, so you’ll encounter them often. If you don’t hack them, you just leave money on the table, but this perk will increase the income you get from hacking them by 50%. And if you’re already investing your points in that direction anyway, you can get an even more advanced tier for this benefit to fully double the swirls you get per hack.
