What is this IRS letter (Notice 1444) and why should I keep it?

With the two previous incentive payments, the IRS sent a confirmation by mail within 15 days of your payment being issued – notifications 1444 and 1444-B. Also expect another message for the third check. While the IRS online tracker tool tells you how when the check is sent it doesn’t say how much money you will get. This is where the letter comes in.

The notice will tell you what the IRS benefit is. If the number is incorrect – like maybe one dependent skipped – or the total doesn’t match our stimulus calculator’s estimated amount, it could indicate that you need to track down your missing money later in 2021 or even 2022 based on next year’s taxes.

The IRS recommends that you keep the notice for your tax return. What this really means is that it is useful if you need to claim missing money in the future. That is a very clear possibility. If it IRS owes you a larger incentive check based on your 2020 taxes, but if you used your 2019 taxes to calculate your total, you will be eligible to claim that money later.

What if I have a new address?

The IRS would have sent a message to your last known address with your payment information. You have to inform the IRS and USPS if you have moved. The IRS must independently have your correct information on file.

Where can I get the IRS information if I can’t find the physical letter?

If you don’t have the IRS confirmation notice, you can find the information in your federal tax account using the IRS website.

If you haven’t set up an account with the IRS, then go to the IRS account page and tap the blue button that says Create or view your account start.

You will need to have some information to set up your account, including tax and financial information, plus an email address and mobile phone number to receive activation codes.

The IRS said that for married couples filing jointly, each spouse must log into their own account.

What if I cannot complete IRS registration?

The online registration process can take approximately 15 minutes. During the installation process, the IRS will first send an email and then text two activation codes. If the codes don’t get through, the agency will send you a letter with an activation code. It may take five to 10 days to get to you. If you want to follow the letter, you can use this free service from the USPS

After you set up your online account with the IRS, you can check your account for the information in the notice. If your incentive payment information isn’t available when you check, the IRS said it should be in the next few weeks.
