Have you ever wondered how YouTube Simmers created their custom content ̵
Custom Content or & # 39; Mods & # 39; is additional resources and behaviors from other players to enrich the game beyond the basic game that Maxis has published. This content often contains clothing for your Sims, features, ambitions and more. Custom content is created and tested by users – it's a big part of the Sims community.
Maxis even encourages and supports the modding community! You can read more about it on The Sims 4 Mods and Game Updates FAQ page.
So, here is a detailed tutorial on activating and downloading mods in The Sims 4 on Windows 10.
Setting custom content
Locate and open your Resource.cfg file After starting The Sims 4 and enabling mods in your game, look for the Mods folder for The Sims 4 . The default path for your Sims 4 folder is in your Documents folder. The Mods folder is generated in the Sims 4 folder once you have started the game with mods enabled. In the Mods folder there is a "Resource.cfg" file. Right-click to open it with a simple text-editing program, such as Notepad. You should see something like that, but on one line:
PackedFile * .package
PackedFile * / *. Package
PackedFile * / * / *. Package
PackedFile * / * / * / *. Package
PackedFile * / * / * / * / *. Package
PackedFile * / * / * / * / * / *. Package
This shows how many folders the system will check for mods / CC. The number of asterisks is equal to the number of folders deep. There must be six by default, as shown here. If you want to add more, just follow the same pattern.
Creating new folders in the Mods folder
This usually applies to people who do not yet have folders in the Mods folder or have created folders, but there is nothing in it. If you already have a few folders with things in it, but a lot of things that aren't, go ahead and follow it.
Create folders labeled "Build / Buy" and "CAS". By creating folders to start with, you are better prepared to keep your files organized later.
Enabling mods in your game
After starting the game Sims 4 you will see a three-point icon in the top right corner of the main menu. When you click on this, you will get the settings menu. Click on the "Other" tab and then select the "Enable custom content and mods" option.
That was the easy part. Go ahead and enable "Script Mods allowed". If the boxes are checked in green, it means that the mods are switched on.
Check if the Mods folder is now in your EA folder
When you have downloaded your download game, you have chosen a folder to Install the Sims 4 . Navigate to it and locate the Mods folder. You will usually find this in Documents> Electronic Art> The Sims 4> Mods, but you may have installed it in a different location. We recommend that you use File Explorer's built-in search box to help you find the folder.
Choose a Mod and download
When you click around and download mods, it is very important to read the fine print. You will come across a huge selection of CC that is compatible with the basic game (no packs required), but many available mods require a pack for some reason (such as a re-texture of a basic game item).
For this tutorial, I have selected a few basic game-compatible mods that are linked below. You will see that all of these mod pages say "compatible with basic game" in the description:
Note: The "Feminine Fall Collection" has individual files, so you can choose what you want to download. Packages sometimes come separately, but not always. Sometimes a set is only available as a merged package with content.
Here is a short list of my favorite and trusted CC sites:
Move the files to your Mods folder
Find the downloaded files on your computer and then move the files manually to The Sims folder 4 Mods.
In the Mods folder, create a Mods Tutorial subfolder (any name is sufficient) and move all ".package" files from the downloads folder into the Mods Tutorial folder. CC that appears on the "Create a household" screen (clothing, hair, accessories, etc.) Is stored in the "CAS" folder, Build / Buy CC must go into the "Build Buy Mods" folder, and so on.
Keeping your folders organized helps you locate damaged files that cause problems in your game. By placing newly downloaded mods in a separate folder, you can also start the game and decide whether you like the new mods that you have downloaded or not. We recommend that you save newly downloaded CC in a folder labeled "new mods" for organizational purposes.
If you start the game and decide that you don't like what you have downloaded, you can easily navigate to the new folder and figure out which file to delete.
The screenshot above contains the file names of the downloaded content that was linked earlier in this message for this manual.
Start your Game!
On the "Making a household" screen, click the "Hair" section. If you are having trouble finding the custom content you downloaded, click the small arrow next to & # 39; Female & # 39 ;, click the content and check the box next to & # 39; Custom Content & # 39; so that the hair section only displays custom content that you downloaded. You can enable this filter on all screens, even in Build / Buy!
What is a Mod versus a Script Mod?
Now that you have a bit dabbled in custom content for The Sims 4 you have to wonder why we have enabled scriptmods. Script mods are coding mods that can change the game behavior, in contrast to already existing Maxis coding. A popular script mod is The Sims 4 MC Command Center Mod made by the user Deaderpool.
The MC Command Center Mod has an abundance of options in the form of multiple modules that address different functionalities: customizing household bills, making selected sims immortal, pregnancies and even creating story sequence-style mechanics. Almost anything you can imagine, this mod can do it and it is constantly updated.
We have already discussed how you can enable script mods, but where do you place the MC Command Center mod in the Mods folder?
First make sure that the modules and packages are placed in the same folder and that the folder is no more than one level deep in The folder structure of the Sims 4 mod. For example, the Sims 4 Mods MCCC is OK, but the Sims 4 Mods Script Mods MCCC is not.
The Sims 4 client only goes one level deep when searching for scriptmods. In the screenshot above you can see that the file & # 39; McCmdCenter & # 39; is in the very first level of the Mods folder. If you don't do this correctly, no scriptmods will appear in your game.
Save and back up your Sims 4 folder
Generally always back up your folder Sims 4 to a USB stick or external drive in case of a disaster. Right-click on your file and then select "Copy" (Ctrl + C on your keyboard), navigate to the safe location you created and right-click and select "Paste" (Ctrl + V on your keyboard) in the new location.
This ensures that you have an updated copy of your game (Sims families and your mods) if you need to reinstall the game. It takes time to build a collection, and it is annoying to lose progress, just like losing saved data for another video game.
And that's about it! Remember that you should always contact the owner of the mod to report bugs or if you have questions.
