Upgrade your storage in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
After updating to patch 1.6.0 (or higher) and launching Animal Crossing: New Horizons, check your inbox. You will see a message from Tom Nook with information about the next possible home upgrade: extra storage!
If you have random items on the floor of your house or island and you don’t know where to store everything yet, this update is for you. Just go to the Resident Services building and talk to Tom Nook about a home upgrade.

He will greet you as soon as you enter. If you want to learn more about the new storage upgrade, head over to his desk and press A on your right Joy-Con controller to jump onto the stool.
Choose About My Home, then select Expand My Storage. Keep in mind that you need to upgrade your home to the highest point first. After you have fully expanded your home and paid off all your loans with Tom Nook, you can start with this upgrade. It expands storage in your home from 1,600 to 2,400 units.
Tom Nook will explain that you have to pay this fee up front and that he cannot offer you loans. When you have the correct number of Bells (you need 500,000 of the in-game currency), select ‘Yes, Let’s Do It!’
Since this payment is required immediately, you must have 500.00 Bells in your inventory when talking to Tom Nook. If you don’t, you can access the ABP machine in Resident Services and withdraw the correct amount for your wallet, then talk to him again.
Your home extension will be available the next day, and you can start transferring more items to your storage.
Home upgrades in Animal Crossing New: Horizons
When you first start Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you have nothing but a tent on your new private island. Tom Nook also asks you to pay 5,000 Nook Miles to cover your travel and tent. You can perform certain tasks to earn the Nook Miles you need to pay off your debt.
Ultimately, your hard work will pay off – Tom Nook will build you a house. For that, however, you will have to take out a very large loan with him and then upgrade every home.
The first loan is 98,000 Bells. Once you pay off that first loan, you can upgrade and get a new one. These upgrades are expensive and require you to spend a lot of time collecting money, but you get more space and customization with each upgrade.
