There are plenty of ways to do this, but we prefer the Down Detector website. It collects information from social media feeds such as Twitter and merges it with Down Detector’s own user reports. Once you make your way to the Down Detector’s Facebook page, you will see one of three messages:
- No current problems with Facebook
- Possible current problems with Facebook
- Current problems on Facebook
If you are having problems, but the Down Detector clarifies everything, you can press the big red button I have a problem with Facebook button to submit a report. Let’s move on to other solutions.
Restart the Facebook app
The good old turn it off, turn it back on, the method still works wonders sometimes. You may have the best luck restarting the Facebook app if all the indications indicate that the company’s servers are working fine. This process is slightly different between Android and iOS, but the end goal remains the same. Follow these steps:
Restart on Android:
- Open your recent apps by tapping the square at the bottom right or swiping up from the bottom.
- Swipe (don’t tap) the Facebook app to close it.
- Tap the app again from your home screen to open it.
There you go, a restarted app. Now we will walk you through the steps on iOS. They depend a bit more on gestures, but the process is simple enough.
Restart on iOS:
- Swipe up from the bottom of your screen and hold to view recent apps.
- Swipe (don’t tap) the Facebook app to the top of your screen to close it.
- Tap the app again from your home screen to open it.
If restarting your app hasn’t worked, it’s time to take a few more in-depth steps.

Update the Facebook app
While restarting your app is usually enough for basic problems, sometimes an update is required. If you are not using the most recent version of the app, you may be missing bug fixes or security updates. Again, we’ll give you the correct steps for both Android and iOS.
Update on Android:
- Open the Google Play Store
- Tap on it hamburger icon top left to open the menu.
- Select My apps and games
- Crane Updating in addition to Facebook or Update everything
Update on iOS:
- Open the App Store
- Select the Today tab.
- Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down to check for updates or select Update everything
Test your internet connection
If you are still having trouble loading Facebook or if updating the app doesn’t work, the problem may be with your internet connection. Hopefully, you have a Wi-Fi connection, in which case there are a few solutions you can try. Check if this is the case, then try some of these methods:
- Turn off your WiFi and use data instead.
- Move closer to your router.
- Reset your router.

If none of the above tricks get Facebook back online right away, don’t give up. Keep using data instead of Wi-Fi and see if the connection lags a bit. You can also invest in a new router, but this may not be necessary if your Wi-Fi is still working on other devices.
Restart your device
We’re back to disabling, re-enabling the method, but we’re not talking about apps anymore. If you still can’t get Facebook to work, try the same logic to reboot your phone.
Chances are, a simple restart will fix your issues and get you back on Facebook right away. Just hold down your power button until you can tap restart. If you’re using an iPhone, wait for the Power off slider to appear.
Delete and reinstall the Facebook app
Sometimes you run into a big bug while scrolling Facebook and can’t find an easy fix. If we haven’t been able to fix the situation so far, it may be time to delete the app and start over. This is the most extreme measure and will require you to log in again. On the other hand, this solves your problem provided it is in your app.

As with Android, all you have to do is go back to the App Store and find the Facebook page. Now install the app and log in again. You should see the latest version again.
Investigate known issues
If you’ve really tried all the options on our list and Facebook is still not working, then the problem is no longer for you. It could be a known issue within the platform or a bug in the app. Fortunately, Facebook runs a Help Center that should keep you informed.
Some of Facebook’s known issues may offer workarounds, which you can find in the Help Center above. If you still can’t find a solution, it’s time to give Facebook a break. Browse other platforms while the developers work on a solution and know you’ll be fun and shared again before you know it.
