Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5: Upgrade PS4 games to next-gen versions for free

Yuffie and her ways to grab Materia are coming to PS5 this week.

You can play most PlayStation 4 games on the Playstation 5 thanks to Sony’s new consoles backward compatibility function. But some publishers allow you to upgrade PS4 games to the PS5 versions for free. This allows you to play with a dynamic resolution of 4K at 60 frames per second and shorter loading times, which makes for a more enjoyable gaming experience.

An important game that gets an update is last year’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Her next Thursday June 10th, along with an expansion — Episode Intermission — featuring the awesome ninja Yuffie Kisaragi. The next-gen update is free for current owners, but not if they bought the game through PlayStation Plus in March. The Yuffie content also costs an additional $20 and is only available on PS5.

On Thursday, the PS4 version added the ability to upload your saved data, as previously reported by IGN. You can then download that file to your PS5 in the new version of the game and pick up where you left off. Any trophies you unlocked in the PS4 version will automatically unlock again on PS5.

It’s a somewhat clunky system to get your save data into the upgraded version, so you’ll need to make sure you do this ahead of time if you want to jump straight to the PS5 version after it comes out.

To the next generation

The PS5 is now available, but has been going in and out of stock at retailers. The digital-only model costs $400, and the one with a disk drive is $500.

Your game upgrades don’t happen automatically or through a typical game update, so it’s easy to accidentally keep playing the PS4 version of a game on your new PS5. You have to go to the game page on PlayStation Network and choose to upgrade to the PS5 version. That downloads the extra data needed for the next-gen features.

You can also upgrade to PS5 versions if you have a physical PS4 game, as long as you bought the PS5 with a disc drive. You should always use the PS4 disc to play the PS5 version; upgrading does not get you a free digital copy of the game. You still download the PS5 update from the PSN, but you don’t need a PS5 specific disc – your PS4 version becomes an authenticator.

If you’ve opted for the digital-only PS5 and have a disc, you’re out of luck. There are a few more limitations and caveats:

  • Some PS5 versions of current PS4 games are not out yet.
  • Next-gen versions will be larger files, so they take up more precious memory on the console’s SSD.
  • You will get a new list of trophies (the list of each version is separate).
  • The saves of a few games are not carried over.
  • Some game upgrades are only available in cross-gen bundles or special editions.
