With Android 10 and iOS 13 you can now apply a system-wide dark theme to the mobile operating systems of Google and Apple. However, the dark mode is not automatically applied everywhere and a few popular apps ̵

It has been going on for months, but Google's popular email app is no longer a holdout because the company implements a dark mode setting for Gmail on Android 10 and on iOS . Google is slowly pushing out the update – in a few weeks – so if you don't have it yet, Google says it's coming soon.

The dark mode is becoming increasingly popular. Before Apple and Google embraced it, the popularity of dark modes for apps was already growing, for example for Facebook Messenger and the Slack and Reddit apps.

With the dark mode you can save a little battery life and the screen of your phone is easier for your eyes at night. Google added dark mode to an Android Pie update earlier this year for the first time but the theme did not appear everywhere. In Android 10, dark mode is much more widespread and apps that use the standard system theme automatically take over the new dark mode when you turn it on, reversing dark and light colors. The new version of Apple's mobile operating system also applies the theme widely, from background, widgets and notifications to Calendar and Messages.

First the dark theme is enabled here in Gmail on Android 10.
