Now President Joe Biden officially the stimulus bill of nearly $ 2 trillion law, the third check for $ 1,400 calculate your total here) is a reality and we may be just days away from the first batch of payments to be sent to eligible AmericansSo how long do you have to wait after the IRS starts releasing the first money to track your payment? And does it matter? It does – significantly.

With the initial check, the IRS quickly opened an online tracking portal. In the second, the US Treasury had already sent checks before the tool was activated. Although you may expect to repeatedly check your bank account for one direct deposit or chasing the mail carrier, the stimulus check tracking tool is your only true communication and confirmation that the IRS has processed your payment, if you sent a paper check or EIP card and when it could come.

The tool will also indicate if there is a problem, which could lead to a delay in receiving your incentive payment. You may need to provide more information to the IRS to resolve the issue. And because the third check comes in the middle of tax season, the details can indicate whether the IRS used your 2019 or 2020 taxes and whether all of your dependent persons correct. If not, that’s a sign that you may need to file a catch-up later. Here’s What You Should Know.

IRS Get my payment: when will it officially go online? What to know

We’re not sure when the IRS will update its tracking tool called Get My Payment, but it will likely happen shortly after the agency starts sending out the third round of incentive checks.

We expect the information to be updated once a day, as with the first two payments. Once the tracking app is live for the third check, enter your social security number, date of birth, street address and zip code. Then the tool displays a message with information about your check – whether the payment was sent, the payment method (direct deposit or by post) and the date of issue. It also lets you know if the service is not yet able to determine your status – more on error messages below.

Why is there a message Need More Information?

Based on the first two checks, you may see an error if the tool cannot determine this your suitability — or if you are not eligible at all, if your payment status is not available or if many people try to open the tool at once (expect that in the first few days).

If the Get My Payment tool gives you a payment date, but you still haven’t received your money, the IRS may need more details from you. The error could also indicate that your check was returned because the the post office could not deliver it

After the IRS starts sending checks, the online tool allows you to enter your bank information to receive your payment straight to your bank account, like it did on the first payment, or it can hold your payment until this one receives a current postal address

What if I see a Payment status not available message?

It’s normal for the Get My Payment tool to give you a message that says “Payment status not available” until the payment is scheduled to be made, according to the IRS. So you don’t have to do anything.

If Get My Payment says the IRS sent a stimulus check, but you never get it, do it

If the IRS online tool says the agency spent your incentive money, but you don’t have it in the mail or in your bank account and it never arrived in your mailbox, you may need to submit a payment check for stimulus checkHandy if you do that too have the letter the IRS may have sent you

What if you throw out the IRS letter confirming your incentive payment?

If the IRS issues you a stimulus check, it will send a notice by mail to your last known address within 15 days of making the payment to confirm delivery. The letter includes information about when and how payment was made, and how to report it to the IRS if you haven’t received your check. The letter is useful if you did not receive your full payment and need to claim your money laterHere’s how Recover the information if you lost or trashed the letter

You may be able to prepare for a third stimulus check

Which the IRS is about to send the third stimulus check, you will probably get it fastest if you have a direct deposit setting up an account. If you don’t, it may not be too late, but you should act quickly. The IRS did not let people register new direct deposit accounts or change their bank details for the second stimulus check and we cannot know at this point whether the agency would allow direct deposit adjustments for the third incentive payment

What we do know is that you can register for a new direct deposit account (in fact, up to three) as part of filing your 2020 tax return. If the IRS receives your bank information before it processes your third-party payment, it will likely use that information to transfer your money.

You can track your emailed stimulus check to your mailbox. Here’s how

If your third stimulus check is mailed, the US Postal Service has a free app that can let you know when it’s about to deliver your stimulus money from the IRS. Called Informed Delivery, the email tracking service automatically scans your letters and can notify you when they will be delivered. Here’s more about it how to set up and use the USPS letter tracking service to keep an eye on your payment.

What if you still owe money from the first and / or second incentive payment?

The IRS no longer automatically sends the first and second payments. If you think you still owe money from one of these rounds, your best bet to claim that the first or second payment is missing is to submit the Credit for chargeback discount as part of fiscal season 2020If you qualify, you need to know how much money the IRS has allocated to you, which you can do find out online or from the letter the agency has emailed
