The Friends Reunion is almost here.

Warner Media / HBO Max

They will be there for you, even if it̵

7;s been 25 years. The friends of the famous NBC sitcom – Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross – are together again, in a highly anticipated special called Friends: the reunion and also called The One Where They Get Back Together. Here’s what you need to know about this week’s reunion.

How and when to watch

Friends: The Reunion will be streaming from May 27 HBO Max. After a brief teaser with the actors’ backs as they walked the Burbank set where the show and reunion were filmed, a new trailer dropped on May 19th. In it, the cast shares laughter, memories and tears.

HBO Max doesn’t have a free trial, so you’ll either need to sign up with a paid membership (currently $ 15 per month) or upgrade an existing HBO plan to include Max.

Maybe you already have access to HBO Max and you don’t even know it. If you currently subscribe to HBO through your cable or satellite provider, you can probably get HBO Max without paying anything extra. We’ll explain it in detail here, but essentially you’ll need to watch on a smart TV or streaming device – or a Comcast Xfinity box – using the HBO Max app and your home internet connection.

Also, after months of delay, Roku finally gave its streaming devices and TVs access to HBO Max. Here you will find more information.

What we know about the reunion

Most of the plans for the show are still secret, but don’t expect a scripted reunion between the characters. This is a special in which the actors appear as themselves, presumably to share and reminisce about memories.

“Nothing is written, we have no character,” actor David Schwimmer said on The Graham Norton Show in April. “We are all ourselves, the real people.”

Then he hinted at … something. “But there’s a section, I don’t want to give it away … where we all read something.” I don’t know exactly what that means. Are they reading something characteristic, perhaps a quick scene that summarizes where the characters might be today? We will see.

The show was filmed on the same Warner Bros. stage in Burbank that Friends have been filming since season two, in front of a live audience.

Where did we leave the friends?

The show started in 1994 and lasted for 10 seasons. The six main characters remain friends and some become romantic partners as the show progresses. They live in New York City and hang out at a coffee shop called Central Perk.

Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston, the series begins by fleeing her marriage to a man she doesn’t love, and instead moves in with her high school best friend, Monica Geller. She worked at Central Perk before starting a fashion career. She eventually falls in and out and in and out of love with Monica’s brother, Ross, and the two have a daughter, Emma.

Chief Monica Geller, played by Courteney Cox and known for her cleanliness and competitiveness, Rachel lets her move into her far too spacious New York apartment. Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani live across the hall and are friends of hers. Eventually, Monica and Chandler fall in love, get married, adopt boy-girl twins, and leave New York City for the suburbs.

Paleontologist Ross Geller, Monica’s older brother, played by David Schwimmer, is a nerdy but smart goofball. He doesn’t start the show until single, when his wife, Carol, finds out she’s a lesbian. He has a son with Carol, and most of his romantic focus in the series involves his sister’s best friend, Rachel. Ross has had a white-headed capuchin named Marcel for a while.

Chandler Bing, played by Matthew Perry, works in various (sometimes mysterious) corporate jobs during the show. He usually rooms with best friend Joey Tribbiani. Monica’s brother, Ross, is Chandler’s roommate. In the end, Chandler and Monica fall for each other and end up with twins. Before Monica, he had a memorable girlfriend named Janice Hosenstein. Could her smile be more annoying?

Actor Joey Tribbiani, played by Matt LeBlanc, is often portrayed as the adult child of the group. In between acting roles, he does everything from work at Central Perk to playing Santa at Christmas. He loves food and is a lady’s man, and dates Rachel for a while, and eventually realizes that they are better as friends. When the series ends, Joey leaves New York to act in LA. LeBlanc starred on the Friends spin-off show Joey for two seasons.

Masseuse Phoebe Buffay, played by Lisa Kudrow, is portrayed as dizzy and wayward, and had a tougher childhood than the others. Her mother killed herself when Phoebe was young, and Phoebe eventually ended up on the street. She has a twin sister, Ursula, is a vegetarian and sings songs she wrote herself, the most infamous Smelly Cat. When the show ends, she is married to her boyfriend Mike (Paul Rudd), with boyfriend Joey who led the wedding.

Cast responses

The cast gathered on Good Morning America to share their excitement about the reunion.

“No one needed to be convinced,” says David Schwimmer. “We all wanted to do it.”

When asked what the stars hope fans will bring from the reunion, Matt Le Blanc said, “I hope the fans will walk away with an idea of what it was like for us to have made the show.”

Courtney Cox said the Friends stars didn’t realize how emotional it would be for them to return to the familiar set remade for the reunion show. “It was so emotional that we just started to cry,” she said.

Which guest stars will appear?

Friends had a number of famous guest stars during the 10-year period, and the reunion is no exception. Guest stars appearing at the reunion include David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon, and Malala Yousafzai.

Friends reunion director Ben Winston warned that the performance of the Korean hit band BTS is letter.

“I want to manage your expectations on this – it’s a very brief moment from BTS,” he tweeted. “They’re great, of course, but they’re one of the interviews where they briefly tell you why they like friends.”

It seems likely that all guest star moments will be short as it is the six main actors fans want to see. Maybe we’ll find out what happens after they’re no longer stuck in second gear, as the theme song blared memorable.
