Galaxy Buds Pro: 10 tips to master Samsung’s latest wireless earbuds

Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro has tons of features you’ll want to learn.

Samsung announced it Galaxy S21, and along with the trio of new phones, the company also unveiled the Galaxy Buds Pro. The fully wireless earbuds compete directly with Apple’s AirPods Pro, with advanced features such as active noise cancellation, long battery life and improved sound quality.

They even have a feature that the AirPods Pro is currently lacking. The Buds Pro can detect when you start talking and will lower the volume of what you are listening to and turn off ANC so you can have a conversation without removing the earplugs. When you’re done talking, the Buds Pro will rock you again.

I’ll show you how to customize that feature, and I’ll walk you through several features and capabilities below.

Pairing your Buds Pro is incredibly easy

After unpacking the Buds Pro, all you have to do is open the case and unlock your phone to pair them with an Android device. A second or two later, you should see a prompt on your phone asking if you want to pair the earbuds. Go through the process, which may take 30 seconds, and then start using your new earbuds.

When pairing them with a Samsung device, the Galaxy Wearable app must already be installed on your phone. If you pair them with another Android phone, you must download and install the companion app from Samsung before you can adjust settings and install software updates.

After your earbuds are paired, launch the Galaxy Wearable app and follow the setup process. When you’re done, you can adjust settings and watch tutorials.

The sides of the Buds Pro are giant touchpads that you can use to control and change playback.

Control music playback and answer calls

Each Galaxy Buds Pro earbud has a large touch area on the side, making it easy to quickly tap the earbud and control playback or answer phone calls on the go. How often you tap determines what happens. Here is the official list of them

  • Single tap: Play or pause what you are listening to.
  • Double tap: Play the next song or answer a call.
  • Triple tap: Play the previous track.
  • Keep touching: Adjustable (more on this below) or reject an incoming call.

Adjust touch and hold for each earbud

As I just mentioned, you can adjust what happens when you press long on each earbud. Open the Wearble app and select Keep touching from the list of options. Once there, select what you want to happen with a long press on one of the earbuds. Your options are:

  • Switch sound controls
  • Voice command
  • Reduce volume
  • Spotify

The Switch noise controls option switches between active noise cancellation and ambient noise. The latter lets in ambient noise without drowning out the audio from what you’re listening to.

Adjust active noise cancellation

There are two different levels of active noise cancellation to choose from: high or low.

Open the Wearble app and scroll down to it Active noise canceling level and then select your preference.

Automatically pause ANC when you start talking.

There is another button in the ANC settings section that brings a unique feature to the Galaxy Buds Pro called Voice Detect. As the name implies, the Buds Pro pauses your voice while you start talking so you can hear the person you are talking to. That way you don’t have to take your earplugs out.

Tap Voice Detection to turn it on and select how long you want the earbuds to wait after hearing your voice so that they revert to the previous volume levels and turn ANC back on. You can choose from 5, 10 and 15 seconds.

If you have a lot of Samsung devices, it is worth enabling this feature.

Switch seamlessly between Samsung devices

There is an optional feature you can enable Seamless connection of earplugs. When it is enabled, you should be able to switch “seamlessly” between devices you use the Buds Pro with. For example, if you are listening to a song on your Galaxy S21 and want to switch to a YouTube video on your Samsung tablet, your earbuds can should automatically switch between the two without having to go through the pairing process again. This feature requires both devices to be signed in with the same Samsung account.

Samsung claims this will work with non-Samsung devices even after you perform the initial pairing on both devices, but I haven’t been able to test it yet.

Either way, you can enable (or disable if you don’t want to use it) the feature by opening the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone and tapping Advanced and slide the switch next to Seamless connection of earplugs to the On position.

Pair your earbuds with another device

After you’ve paired the Buds Pro with your phone and you want to pair them with another device, be it a computer, tablet, or another phone, the process is a bit different.

Take the Galaxy Buds Pro out of the case and put it in your ears. Press and hold each earbud for about three seconds or until you hear a beep. After that, open the Bluetooth pairing menu on the device you want to pair with and complete the process.

Galaxy Buds Pro review: worth the upgrade?

Check the battery life

Quickly check the battery status of the earbuds or charging case, open the Wearable app and view the statistics at the top of the screen. If you’re using the Buds Pro, this is the only item that will be displayed. You can check the status of the case and earbuds while they are in the charging case and open next to the phone.

Install a software update

If a software update is available for your Buds Pro, the Wearable app will let you know and walk you through the process.

To make the update process as smooth as possible, make sure to place the earbuds in the charging case and follow the instructions in the Wearable app. I updated my Buds Pro after the initial setup and it took less than five minutes in total.
