#GivingTuesdayNow: Why now? – Senior Planet

It is undeniable that difficult times are ahead, but we as Senior Planet have been lucky enough to find light as a community during this difficult time.

Thanks to the incredible dedication of members and employees, Senior Planet has seen unprecedented collaboration and growth over the past month and a half, enabling us to connect with more older adults than ever before. Between Friday and Monday, we ran our entire program delivery model and since then we have been able to offer 165 unique online programs to over 8,000 participants from across the country. We've also launched a comprehensive nationwide call-out campaign to reach more than 2,800 older people nationwide, provide support and help them get online, and created new guides for cheap internet and devices, Zoom training in three languages, compilations from resources, and more much more . The impact is measurable: 89% of people who participate in our online programs say they feel more connected to it, and 78% say they are more equipped to find online resources.

But most of the time we are inspired by the steadfastness of readers like you, who refuse to let social distance make your voice smaller. The way you ̵

1; Senior Planet readers, members and participants – have supported each other online is inspiring. Whether in the comment sections here on seniorplanet.org or in the daily virtual social gatherings, you have shared resources and kindness that have brought us all closer together.

Now we ask for your help.

To help increase our ability to help seniors fight social isolation and build technology skills to access essential online resources, we are joining the national movement for giving # GivingTuesdayNow [19659006] on May 5.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency on COVID-19. It is a day when we can come together and give back in every way, no matter who or where we are – an opportunity for people around the world to use their individual generosity to stay connected.

Even if we take physical distance, we can remain connected through kindness and generosity. Generosity can help reduce the isolation and loneliness that many of us feel today, and our ability to give help and hope can counter feelings of powerlessness.

Here are the two ways you can now generously support Senior Planet:

  1. If you can give right now, please help support the work of Senior Planet by donating to help us meet fundraising target of $ 5,000 .
  2. Help spread the word on social media! We ask our members and partners from across the country to post their support for Senior Planet on their social media pages on Tuesday, May 5 at 3:00 PM.

By posting at that time, you will play a critical role in raising awareness about our campaign and helping Senior Planet continue our work on behalf of older adults across the country. Here's how:

-Create a sign that says' Why support Senior Planet now? Because… ”(enter your answer).

-Take a picture with the sign

-Post it on your social media at 3:00 pm on May 5 and tag Senior Planet!

Why support Senior Planet now? With quarantines and social distances, the world has moved almost entirely online. People who are uncomfortable with new technologies now have a major drawback: not only should we have access to essential online services such as telemedicine and food delivery, but we all now need technology to maintain a social network. Social isolation is just as harmful to a person's health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. We refuse to let that happen to older adults. Senior Planet programs help build a foundation of social support and skills to help older people manage their lives in this time of uncertainty, and we do it with the same energy, openness and attitude as ever.
