Good News About Senior Fitness News about Senior Health and Fitness

May 26 is one of two National Senior Health and Fitness Days this year. The theme? Life is moving better. The private-public good health partnership is organized by the Mature Market Resource Center, an exchange center for professionals working with older adults.

Life is moving better

So we did some research on the why behind this year’s slogan: ‘Life is moving better’.

This is what we found:

Fitness and cognitive ability are closely linked.

  • According to a study, a higher condition can protect the brain. Researchers evaluated 66 adults, average age 68, measured their fitness while riding exercise bikes, and then tested their thinking ability. The fitter they were, the better their executive function (tasks such as attention control, memory).

There is no need to take it easy (if your doctor approves).

We have all heard that we should slow down our exercise intensity as we age. However, experts at Mayo Clinic say that exercise known as HIIT (high-intensity interval training) can be good at any age. It̵

7;s based on exercising at high intensity for 30 seconds to a few minutes, then backing up and then repeating. In people over 65, HIIT appeared to enhance the muscle’s ability to produce energy and stimulate new muscle growth, counteracting the muscle loss associated with birthdays. Warning: Seek professional help and combine HIIT with lighter exercises in between.

Get fit, sleep better.

Researchers looked at more than 24,000 adults aged 65 and over in Taiwan and assessed their physical fitness and sleep. They divided them into four groups based on fitness levels. The fitter they were, the better their long sleep duration (8 hours or more). That means paying attention to seniors’ health and fitness means a better time to fire!

Exercise FTW!

Two personal trainers who specialize in helping older adults find the same results in their clients as the experts above. Gone are the days of ‘treating older adults like a different species’ when it comes to exercise, says Sabrena Jo, MS, director of science and research at the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and an ACE-certified personal trainer and coach in Lawrence, KS.

“Older adults with depression often get a better mood as soon as they start or resume exercise”

Whether an older adult has been a lifelong athlete or is a late bloomer, she believes, great results can be achieved with exercise.

Older adults with depression often get a better mood as soon as they start or resume exercising, says Lori Michiel, a National Association of Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer in Southern California. She also notes that people with diabetes can lower their medication dose because their blood sugar drops with regular exercise.
