The Google Maps update provides useful information about public transportation.

Google

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Google Maps, Google is rolling out a major update to its planning and navigation app for iPhone and Android that gives you more detailed information about what you encounter when using public transportation to to travel around.

Since its launch in 2005, Google has expanded Maps from a navigation tool to a more comprehensive travel and entertainment service that can help you do everything from making dinner reservations and managing travel routes to find EV charging points along your route.

The update extends the usefulness of public transport tickets and shows how busy or hot a route can be, as well as whether there is normal security during the journey.

Here you can read how to use the latest public transport functions of Google Maps.

Using the new Google Maps transit tools

The new Google Maps update advances a number of useful tools that you were previously looking for and expands the information to provide you with information about your public transport journeys. Here are five new tabs from Google Maps and how to use them.

Explore. On the Explore tab you can discover what is happening around you and find places to eat and things to do.

commute. A remnant from the previous version of Maps, on this tab you can get step-by-step instructions for your journey here – if you travel by car, public transport, on foot or by bike.

At this moment you can already see how busy or empty your bus, metro or train will be when you choose your public transport line. With the update you can also see information provided by the driver about which accessibility functions are available, what the temperature is, whether there is a section or carriage for women only and whether there is security.

Saved. Your saved places were buried in the navigation menu in the upper left corner. You can now find the places you've saved on the Saved tab at the bottom of the Maps app.

Contribute. On the Contribute tab, formerly called your contributions, you can share reviews and photos of places of interest that you have visited, add a missing place on the map, and propose edits on the map. If you participate in the Google Local Guides program, you can earn points for your contributions and earn rewards, such as a free six-month subscription to Google One.

Updates. This new tab is a bit like the older tab For you, so that you can see what is happening around you, with guidance from the local population and publications such as Surface and The Infatuation.

If you don't have the new version yet, wait a while because it is coming: Google tends to push out app updates slowly – in days and weeks. For more information about Google's navigation app, see six hidden Maps tricks and four ways to use Maps without driving.
