Google is ending development of Android Things, an operating system you’ve probably forgotten about – Review Geek

Android stuff dies. Wait, that’s not news, with over a billion devices on the market, at least a few are going to go ̵

1; what’s that? Sorry, I misread my notes. Android Things, an operating system developed by Google for smart home gadgets and other IOT devices, is dying. Sorry for the confusion.

Android Things came to life in 2016, heralded as a way for device manufacturers and app developers alike to easily translate their Android infrastructure into smart home technology. And while a few devices launched, most notably the original version of the Lenovo Smart Display, Google almost immediately undermined its own operating system by using a modified version of Chromecast software on the much more popular Google Home Hub.

After trying to sharpen Android Things’s broad IOT focus to just smart speakers and smart screens, Google has now announced that its Android Things developer console will not accept any new non-commercial projects starting January 5, 2021. A year after that, it will turn off the services for over-the-air updates, although it says this is also for ‘non-commercial use’. Presumably, the few companies that have released products based on Android Things will continue to have the ability to support them.

You could think of this as another resident of the Google Graveyard, or you could simply shake it up to the smarthome market moving so quickly and so widely that Google needed a different strategy almost immediately. Since it has become one of the leading suppliers with its Google Home / Assistant platform, it probably made the right decision … but that’s a little comfort if you really like your Lenovo Smart Display.
