Almost a month ago, Google pre-orders launched for a $25 adapter that would make it Nest thermostat compatible with older homes. Google is now making the adapter available for free for a limited time and will notify eligible customers.

The Nest Power Connector is useful for people who use a Nest thermostat in an older home without a C wire. While Nest thermostats usually work fine without a C-wire, the lack of continuous power can lead to issues such as disconnections or Wi-Fi connectivity.

There is always the option of paying an electrician to install a C wire for you, but that can be very expensive. If you̵

7;re looking to save a few bucks, the now-free power adapter might be the better way to go…although installing it isn’t the easiest for the average consumer.

Fortunately, Google free online help to install the Nest Power Connector yourself. However, it does require a 24 VAC system, and only works with the Nest Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, and the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat. If you use a Nest Thermostat and live in an older home where it isn’t connected to a C wire, check your inbox for an email from Google. You may also receive a notification on the device itself or via the mobile app.
