Fortunately, hair stylists are no stranger to helping people fix hair mishaps and have a few tried and true tricks to help you grow your hair longer and faster. While nature should eventually take its course when it comes to growing your hair (most of us average half an inch per month), the tips below are the ones hairstylists swear by.
Use the right shampoo and try a serum
The key to hair that grows well is healthy hair, and “the trick to healthy hair is a healthy scalp,” said Joseph Maine, renowned hairstylist and co-founder of Trademark Beauty.
Healthy skin and hair starts with a good foundation of healthy lifestyle factors such as good nutrition, sleep and exercise. When it comes to products like shampoo, according to Maine, you want to use a product that keeps your scalp healthy and free of build-up. When shopping for shampoos and products, pay attentionand that can help to remove any deposits.
A scalp serum can also help improve scalp health, which in turn promotes hair growth. Shelly Aguirre, a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, recommends using the“It gives the scalp a healthy place to grow hair. Just as we use serums for our face, we should take the same approach for our scalp,” she says.
Castor oil is also a popular scalp serum recommended by hair stylists, although there is no solid science to back up the claim that it can help your hair grow. You can use it in the same way as a serum, by applying it to the scalp.
Provide regular dusting
It sounds a bit counterintuitive, but getting a light trim actually helps your hair grow faster. “As your points start to dry out or split, they will fall apart and break, making it very difficult to gain length. Stay ahead of the break by getting a light fabric treatment every 8 to 12 weeks,” says Maine.
“Hair grows at a rate of about an inch per month. The problem is split ends keep splitting. So if you don’t remove the split ends, they can make your hair look weaker. Not to mention moving the hair. the split ends up the hair shaft, “says Aguirre. Aguirre agrees with Maine’s advice that regular trimming will help your hair grow faster, as you care for split ends before they become a problem.
Easy to bleach or chemically process
If you’re trying to grow your hair, the goal is to keep your hair and scalp as healthy as possible and avoid anything that detracts from how strong it is. One thing that can cause damage over time is bleaching or other chemical treatments.
“If you are naturally darker, stay closer to your natural tones [with your hair color]. This will be less harmful to the hair in the long run. There are plenty of options for adding depth and dimension without bleach, ”suggests Aguirre.
Reduce heat damage
Heat is another culprit for strand damage. If you blow-dry and style your hair every day with heat tools, you will want to try and let the heat sit (or at least cut back on its use) to keep your hair healthier and stronger. “Even [if you use] heat protectants, over time the heat will wreak havoc, ”says Aguirre.
Aguirre also recommends rinsing your hair with cool water at the end of your shower, as “the cool water closes the cuticle, strengthening your hair before styling,” she says. You can also tryor satin to reduce possible breakage and damage. “This prevents any friction that cotton pillowcases can cause. Your hair will slide,” she says.

“I personally always recommend Nutrafol. In addition to making your hair grow faster, it can also make it thicker by reducing sales,” says Maine. Nutrafol is a popular hair growth supplement that contains vitamins, minerals and other herbs that are supposed to aid in metabolism, hormones, inflammation, stress, environment and nutrition – all areas that the brand claims can contribute to hair loss.
The company funded a clinical research study of the product, which showed promising results over the six-month study period. It’s important to keep in mind that the most rigorous studies have no conflict of interest – meaning that since Nutrafol funded the study, positive results are expected to be there.
The other most popular vitamin associated with hair growth is biotin. Before starting to use biotin, check with your doctor to see if you are deficient. The science around biotin and hair growth isn’t actually that solid, so taking a supplement may not be necessary. According to a systematic review published in 2017, there isn’t enough research to back up the claim that taking biotin supports hair growth.
