With Samsung’s One UI 3.0 update, the main on-screen volume slider has a three-dot menu button on top. Tapping on this will expand the slider into a full volume panel, complete with controls for all the different types of sounds your Galaxy can make. Standard things actually, but there is more to it.
In the top right corner of the expanded volume panel is a gear-shaped icon that predictably takes you to your sound settings. But in the top left corner is a strange little button that looks like a letter. This is the one that really adds brand new functionality to your Galaxy – a feature that’s almost whimsically futuristic.
This little icon is the Live Transcribe button. It is a new accessibility feature from Google that Samsung has integrated into its volume panel in recent software versions.
To try it out, press one of the physical volume buttons on the side of your Galaxy. When the volume slider appears on the screen, tap the ellipses and select the Live Transcribe button in the top left corner of the expanded volume panel. The icon will change from gray to white when the feature is enabled. At that point, you can tap outside of the volume panel to close it, or you can just wait for it to time out.
What you just did is possibly the best speech to text transcriber enabled available to consumers right now. Seriously, it’s pretty wild – eerily accurate captions for every app on your phone. Every video in your camera roll gets live captions, just like every streaming or local video you come across and every podcast.
You should know that this uses battery. Usually while it is actively analyzing audio, and to a lesser extent when it is inactive. Every time it is active, there will be a continuous notification to remind you. If you really like this feature, you can hide that notification and leave it on at the expense of battery life. But you’re supposed to just hit that little button in the volume panel if you want to use the feature and tap again to turn it off when you’re done.
