How do I know if my check has been sent by post?

In April, the IRS began transferring the first stimulus payments to the accounts of tens of millions of US residents who set up a direct down payment to the government . But not everyone receives an electronic transfer.

The Treasury Department said it sends 4 million prepaid economic impact payments or EIP prepaid debit cards to some who are eligible for payment. You will likely get one if the government doesn't have your banking information. For others, the IRS sends checks by mail. We asked the US Treasury to clarify who gets a check and who gets a bank card.

Until all checks go out, the Get My Payment app can tell you when your payment is being made and how. The IRS will also send you a letter about 15 days after payment with information about the amount you received and how you received it.

How do I know my status information is correct and what if I get an error?

Unfortunately, you may see confusing messages when you use the status tool – so much so that the IRS explains general status messages in a FAQ. You may receive a message if, for example, it is impossible to determine whether you are eligible or if your payment status is not available. We are investigating, but so far we have discovered a handful of reasons why Get My Payment may not be able to track your payment status .

The IRS updates status tracking information about who has and has not received payment once a day.

You do not have to register to receive stimulus money

To receive the stimulus payment, you may have to file a tax return for [2018] or 2019 if it is normally required. You can still do that now. Here's how .

Seniors, social security recipients, railroad retirees, and other beneficiaries who typically do not need to file a tax return do not need to apply for payment.

Again, the service will send a letter to the last known address of a taxpayer within 15 days of sending the payment. The letter provides information on when and how the payment was made, and how to report to the IRS if you have not received your check.
