Thanks to the poinsettia popping up in the sky, 2020 ended with a bang. But 2021

has its own share of upcoming astronomical events, and the Wolf Moon is the first.

What is the Wolf Moon? At its most basic level, it is the first full moon of the year. However, if you dig deeper, it got this nickname when Native Americans heard wolves howling around the time of the most full moon phase. It is also called a “cold moon” and a “grave moon” because of the weather around the time it appears.

If you want to see the first full moon of the year in the United States, it will take place on January 28th. Technically, the best time to see it is 2:16 p.m. ET, but that will be broad daylight for most of the country.

However, the moon remains visible in its full stage for a few days after its peak. As the sun sets on January 28, make plans to watch this year’s first major astronomical event.
