How fast can you really type on your iPhone? Take these tests to find out «iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

We use our smartphones every day. They are part of our daily routine which is why we have become very good at them, especially when it comes to typing really fast. But how fast can you type on your iPhone? Can you tune your speed on a physical keyboard for your computer or tablet? You could surprise yourself.

Better on-screen keyboards, predictive text, auto-correct and other on-screen typing features – as well as years of experience with a smartphone – allow many people to type faster on an iPhone than on a physical keyboard.

According to a 2019 study conducted by researchers at Aalto University (Finland) and University of Cambridge (UK), information collected from 37,000 people shows that the average typing speed on smartphones is 36.2 words per minute, with 2.3 % uncorrected errors, while fastest typer clocked at 85 wpm. In comparison, the average typing speed on computers is 52 wpm.

These numbers are remarkable and are likely to increase as well. The study found that the fastest typers were, of course, teenagers, as they were introduced to on-screen keyboards at a younger age than adults. Those between the ages of 1

0 and 19 are typing faster than those between the ages of 20 and 39, and it’s a good bet that Generations Z and Alpha – the youngest demographic cohorts – will only get faster.

So, how well do you think you would fare compared to those in the study? If you’ve ever wondered how fast your iPhone typing skills are, there are a couple of different ways to test your words by the minute. The tests involve typing popular words, random phrases, and more, but all provide well-rounded statistics that will help you adequately measure your typing speed.

Option 1: Use the ‘Speed Typer’ app

Speed Typer, made by justncode LLC, helps you determine your typing skills with various “games” in which you quickly type random words and phrases for a specified amount of time. The app does have ads that can be removed for $ 2.99, but the games are all free, unlike other typing tests in the App Store. The in-app purchase also unlocks saved stats, but that feature isn’t live yet.

On the homepage you can choose from five different games:

  • Top 300 words: you type the top 300 popular words in any order.
  • Top 500 words: you type the top 500 popular words in any order.
  • Top 1,000 words: you type the top 1000 popular words in any order.
  • Random phrases: you type random sentences full of punctuation and capital letters, making it a bit more difficult than the other tests. This is the best option for getting a more accurate wpm value as it contains more than just letters.
  • Alphabet: you type the letters of the alphabet in random order.

Each of these tests takes one minute. As you type, you will see your words per minute in real time at the top, but you should ignore that as it will only slow you down.

Words that have been typed correctly are shown in blue, while incorrect words are shown in red. You don’t really have to worry about going back and fixing every mistake as that will slow down your speed, but if you get a lot of errors your wpm score will suffer.

There is no autocorrect to save you, so you are completely relying on your typing skills. You can still swipe to type on keyboards with swipe, like Apple’s, but you have to press the spacebar after each word, which you wouldn’t normally do with a swipe keyboard. Once you complete each test, you will get your words per minute as well as your correct keystrokes, correct words and accuracy.

You can earn badges every time you play, visible in the “Badges” tab. Most are designed to break wpm barriers, such as reaching 30 wpm or 120 wpm, but some are related to the number of tests you take.

In the app’s settings, you can customize your typing experience during tests with any of the following preferences, some of which can drastically change your score.

  • To view errors: This toggle is on by default, but turn it off if you don’t want to be distracted by red-colored words.
  • Automatic space: This toggle is off by default, requiring you to tap the space bar after each word. Turning it on will make you perform much faster and work better with swipe keyboards.
  • Test duration: You can increase the time limit from one minute to three or five to measure your stamina.
  • Word set: By default it is set to “Small”, which applies to the “Top Words” games. If you are a really fast typer, you may want to increase it to “Medium” or “Large” so that you never run out of words in the allotted time.

Option 2: Use the ‘TypingTest’ website

If you don’t want to download an app, there are plenty of typing test web apps you can use in your browser that work on Android devices too. One of the better ones, TypingTest.com, claims to be the # 1 typing speed test with more than four million tests completed per month.

As for the test, you have several options to choose from. You can choose different times for the test in the first drop-down menu, ranging from one to ten minutes. In the second drop-down list you can change the difficulty, ranging from “Easy” to “Difficult”; there are also alternative options such as “Tricky Spelling”, “Blind Typing” and “Themed.”

When you are ready to begin, click on the yellow “Start typing test” button. On the next page, tap “Click or tap here and start typing” and start typing. If you have a swipe keyboard, you can try that in the test, but it’s more difficult to try, as the test will have a hard time recognizing swipes instead of actual keystrokes.

At the top of the page, you will see how much time is left, as well as your errors and real-time typing speed. You need to be concerned about capitalization and punctuation. Errors are underlined where you type. And again, you don’t have an autocorrect to help you.

When you are done, you will be taken to another page showing your final score. Your mistakes work against you again and lower your wpm score, so it’s important to be not only quick but also careful and correct. A graph below your grades shows the service’s average typist, as well as past scores, best scores, and your current score.

Other web apps that can test your typing skills on your iPhone include typing-test-mobile.com, Powertyping, and 10 Fast Fingers, just to name a few.
