Shoes are not made to last forever and sports shoes are even more subject to wear than your everyday pair. But how often do you need to replace your hiking boots, and how do you know when it is time?
Why you should replace them
Even if your hiking boots still look good, they can be worn out. And if you wear them beyond their lifetime, your risk of injury increases.
The support in your shoes can wear out and they can lose shock absorption. These problems are not always visible, but they can cause foot pain.
If you continue to wear worn-out shoes, you may experience shin bones or neck and back pain.
How do you know when your shoes are worn out?
It may not be clear when your walking shoes are worn out. You have to look at more than what is easily visible. You have to look at the inside and the outside.
Over time, all shoes show signs of wear, but here are some things you can check to make sure they are still in good condition:
- How they feel: If your shoes are not as comfortable as before, it is probably time to buy a new pair. You may notice that they don't have that much support, or that your feet hurt when you wear them, even for a short time.
- How they fit: Do your feet glide around? Being loose can be a sign that your shoes will break internally ̵
- See them about: Is the outsole visibly worn? Depending on your step, the heel or other part of the sole may be worn out. If there are any worn spots on the sole, these can affect how you step, which over time leads to leg pain.
- Keep track of your mileage: Studies have shown that shock absorption in running shoes wears between 350 and 500 miles. You can expect a similar lifespan for your hiking boots. Even if they still look like they are in working order, if they can no longer protect your feet, it's time to invest in a new pair.
