A digital artist is someone who makes digital art for a living. That means art that uses software and hardware tools and is suitable for a range of commercial applications.
If you have a creative approach and enjoy drawing and painting, this can be an extremely rewarding and stress-free method to earn money on a basis if necessary. What's more, knowing how to create digital art is just one of the useful tools that can help you with a host of other business models and sideways crowds.

So how do you start with digital art? Which tools do you need? And where do you find work? Let's see.
How do you start with digital art: the right hardware
To get started with digital art you need certain hardware and software. Many digital artists choose to use a Wacom graphic tablet. This is a small slate that comes with a stylus and connects to a desktop computer. The idea is that you can now draw directly on the tablet and see your creations appear on the screen. This offers much more control than would be possible with a mouse.
Another option is to use a tablet, such as an iPad Pro or a Surface Pro. This has many advantages, such as the ability to draw directly on your illustrations and to take your creations with you. iPads and Surface Pros are especially well appreciated by digital artists due to their sensitivity and minimal delay, and they are increasingly becoming the de facto option. Which of these tools you ultimately choose may depend on the software you want to use (more on that soon).
Of course you can use a Samsung Galaxy Tab or a Note but the software support is slightly more limited. And the screen is rather tight for the latter.
Knowing which program is right for you depends on the type of art you want to create.
It is possible to use a number of tools with a mouse and keyboard, and in fact some software will be easier to use this way – so you also have to invest in a good PC.
Raster versus vector art
After you have sorted the hardware, the next step is the software. Knowing which program is right for you depends on the type of art you want to create. That means you have to understand the difference between a raster file and a vector file.
A raster file is a bitmap image whose pixels are plotted as a map. This includes many of the file types that you probably know: for example, JPG, GIF and PNG. Each pixel is a point in a grid, which means that it is very easy to draw directly on the image. However, it also means that the image is difficult to edit without erasing entire sections. Similarly, when you zoom in on the photo, those points get bigger, which causes pixilation.
Raster images are common on the internet because they are supported by most browsers and operating systems. However, they are not very versatile.
A vector file, on the other hand, works more like a set of instructions. Vector art consists of many lines and curves, and the image stores details about all of these instructions (move 30% over the image at an angle of 20 degrees, then curve at an angle of …) to reproduce the image if necessary.

This means that you can zoom in on the image and that the quality is preserved. The instructions are simply scaled to match the raised canvas. Similarly, you can remove individual strokes or change angles at any point without affecting the rest of the image. Designers offering logos must provide vector files in addition to their final raster images. A company must be able to reproduce its logo at any size and must be able to edit it while maintaining the same relative dimensions. The same applies to many performances by digital artists: whether you make a print for an item of clothing or an icon for a user interface. Keep in mind that vector software is generally less intuitive and flexible.
This means that you can zoom in on the image and that the quality is preserved.
There are other files that you might also work with. For example, you can give yourself an advantage by learning to make 3D models. This allows you to add a 3D element to your images, create different types of art and even create images for use as a reference. Learning 3D is not strictly required for many types of performances, but it can really give you a competitive edge, so it is highly recommended.
The best software for digital artists
With all that said, here are some apps that digital artists can get started with:
Procreate: If you own an iPad Pro and you want an tool that allows you to get started with digital art quickly and easily, then download Procreate. It doesn't cost much (around $ 15), but it is one of the most intuitive and powerful tools for creating stunning digital art.
Procreate is for raster files. It offers a huge range of interesting brushes, many customization options and the option to work with huge canvases and lots of layers. The latter point is especially important because it means that you can experiment without harming your work so far. It also means that you can scan and then scan the work that you have drawn with a pen and paper. Handy shortcuts (such as double tapping your finger to undo) make the work even faster and the app automatically saves every step so that you can export a video of your artwork at the end. It is really a brilliant tool.
Get it from the App Store
Adobe Photoshop: Photoshop is the primary option for many digital artists. It not only offers a wide variety of brushes, powerful layer management and support for a range of devices and tablets; but it also comes with all the filters, actions, and other functions that you are probably associating with photo retouching. Those with the skill can create incredibly breathtaking illustrations from start to finish, all in Photoshop. If you are looking for a free alternative, then Gimp is also good, but it lacks many digital artist-focused functions.
ArtRage: ArtRage is another bitmap graphic editor that works in a similar way to reproduce. However, unlike Procreate, this is platform independent, meaning that Windows users are invited to join. It even works with Android and the Samsung S Pen. It is a very popular option among digital artists and is versatile to support a wide range of art styles, especially watercolor-style paintings. ArtRage Lite is a cheaper option for starters.
Get for Windows
Krita: Krita is another raster graphic editor that uses layers and brushes. It supports Windows, Linux and macOS, but what really sets them apart is that it is completely free and open source.
Adobe Illustrator: If you are interested in creating vector graphics, then there really is a tool that stands out: Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is very industry standard and has all the features you might need and most tutorials will be focused on this program. That said, you can still create vector art with a number of other tools, such as Inkscape.
Blender: Blender is just one of the many 3D modeling programs that you can use to create 3D art. Blender is a good choice because it is open source and free and you can download it from Steam!

Design Doll: Design Doll is a small program that you can use to reference positions for digital art. I've been using it lately and it can really help you figure out tricky perspectives and angles. With the tool you can also export 3D models and flat PNG images, and the free version contains most functions. However, it is only Windows.
How to get better in digital art
To start digital art, my recommendation is to grab an iPad with a copy of Procreate, or a Surface Pro and Krita / Art Rage. From there, it's mainly a matter of practice and perseverance: even if your images look bad in the beginning, stay with it and they get better! As soon as you feel that you have mastered the raster tools, you go to vector art and 3D modeling.
You can learn to accelerate by following a course or by viewing some of the free tutorials for specific software packages on SkillShare.
Here are some courses that we recommend for Udemy digital artists:
You can also find many tutorials on YouTube, as well as & # 39; speed paintings & # 39; that guide you through the entire process of creating a piece of digital art (there are also plenty of real-time videos & # 39; s). These are great to get tips and to see how the professionals work. You can even find some big names here, such as one of my favorite comic artists, Jim Lee.
How do digital artists earn money?
But maybe you can already draw and now you want to know how to become a digital artist paid for their work?
How much do digital artists actually earn?
Answering that last question is difficult because it is very dependent on the quality of the art and the type of customer. The British site Glassdoor suggests that digital artists earn around £ 23,030 a year. That is around $ 29,691. That is not very much, but if you are a much sought after artist with a large following, who is able to find large customers and recommend a high percentage, then this can all change.

Because digital art is scalable, editable and potentially almost perfect, there is a lot of demand everywhere: from comics, book covers to video games , to marketing material, technical pamphlets, websites and more.
You can find work as a digital artist through the usual online freelance tools, or you can approach a desk or company.
More important, however, is to spend time creating your own work portfolio. Develop your skills, find an art style and share your work on Deviant Art, Tumblr, Instagram and Pinterest. Create your own blog, contribute to forums and be active in the community. Make sure that people can trace your work to you.
If you do all of this successfully, you will find that potential customers are approaching you . That's when you can start paying the big money.

Finally you can also make money with your digital art by using it in combination with other skills. Internet marketers and others who want to make money online often do not recognize the potential value of these types of skills. If you can create compelling art to promote an e-book, make your website stand out, or even use thumbnails in your & # 39; s video, then you can use your & # 39; value proposition & # 39; sell better and ensure that your products evoke an emotional response.
