Amazon might not be making it easy to do right away either, and keep in mind that once you close your Amazon account, you will lose access to quite a few services. However, if you rarely use the service, scrapping the Prime subscription service means you won’t pay the current $ 12.99 a month or $ 119 a year fee.
Below we’ll show you how to cancel your Prime subscription, request a refund, and close your account. There is no need to close your account if you just want to unsubscribe from Amazon Prime. We will also summarize the Amazon services that you can no longer use.
How to cancel your Amazon Prime subscription
To cancel your Amazon Prime subscription, log in to your Amazon account and click on the Account drop. Then select Prime membership. Then click Update, cancel and more below the Membership section, followed by Terminate membership. You can also go to this support page and click the Terminate membership button to go directly to the right page.
You must confirm that you want to cancel your membership three different times. Amazon will try to move you to one of several other options (also pictured below):
- A monthly instead of an annual subscription
- Get an alert a few days before your subscription renews so you can decide
- Pause your membership on your renewal date
- Cancel your membership on the renewal date
If you want to cancel your membership completely, you will have to go past these other options to get to that point.
Who can get a refund when canceling Amazon Prime?
Under the terms and conditions, people can cancel without taking advantage of Prime benefits (such as free shipping or) may be automatically eligible for a refund.
However, according to DoNotPay, you can request a partial refund for the time remaining. It looks like you get one or not, but it’s worth contacting Amazon support and asking for it.
I reached out to Amazon’s chat support while researching this article and was quickly informed that no refunds had been issued, but you may be luckier than me, especially if you close your account completely. DoNotPay recommends calling Amazon support or using the contact form instead of chatting.
It takes three to five days for Amazon to process any refunds. I suggest waiting for your refund to be processed and in your bank account before closing your account completely.
Now you can close your Amazon account
Now that your Prime membership has been canceled and payment returned, you can close your Amazon account if you wish. Keep in mind that this is a permanent process and once it is completed you will lose all data associated with your account along with access to everything Amazon related. If you change your mind in the future, you will need to sign up for a brand new Amazon account.
A few examples of what you lose access to: Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Photos, Audible, and all Kindle content, in addition to free, faster shipping of Amazon Prime items.
To get started, download any data you have stored in your Amazon account, such as anything stored in Amazon Photos, before proceeding. The easiest way to do that is to use the desktop app.
Amazon has a more complete list of everything associated with your account on this support page. If you’ve viewed the list and want to close your account, visit this page on the Amazon site.
There you will be presented with a list of all the data and services associated with your account that will be deleted. Again, study it carefully to make sure you don’t need anything. For example, if you are a Whole Foods customer, your grocery store account will also be deleted.
At the bottom of the list is a check box that you must select, followed by a final click on the labeled button Close my account. Your request will be sent and processed.
