How to Close All Safari Tabs at Once on iPhone and iPad

Apple iOS and iPadOS Safari Icon Hero

If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and you need to quickly clear them, it can be annoying to “X” them one by one. Fortunately, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they work in private browsing mode too. Here’s how.

First, open “Safari” on your iPhone or iPad. On any page, look for the switch tabs button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you̵

On the iPhone, this is in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Place your finger on the switch tabs button and hold it there for a moment while performing a “long press”. Select ‘Close all tabs’ from the menu that appears. (There will be a number in the selection indicating the number of open tabs.)

Select from the menu that appears

When Safari asks you to confirm with another popup, tap “Close all tabs” again. After that, all your browser tabs will be closed.

On the tab switch screen, find the “Done” button, which is located at the top right corner of the screen on the iPad and the bottom right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long press the “Done” button – place and hold your finger there for a moment until a popup appears.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all tabs with another pop-up message. Select “Close all tabs” again. Then all your Safari tabs will be closed immediately. The same action works in private browsing mode. Useful!

How to reopen recently closed tabs

If you’ve accidentally closed all your tabs and would like to get them back, you can get them one by one as long as you’re not in private browsing mode. Just tap the switch tabs button and long press the “+” button until a list of “Recently closed tabs” appears. From there, you can tap on items in the list to reopen them in Safari. Good luck!
